First, my father passes away on the 9th, then I get a phone call today from my best friends wife. Many of you know him as Joe Buckle, the BBQ master of the So Cal contingent, he is in the hospital tonight and they may admit him. I just got home from there, he is awake and says he is fine but his heart monitor says otherwise. The doctor says he is A-Fib, I am not sure what it means but I do know, it is not a good thing. We need the power of Prayer again from all of you as I dont think I could take another loss in my life this close to my father passing. For those who dont know him, he is one of those kinds of people that is rare in todays world, He is a great father of two beautiful girls, has been blessed with a wonderful and understanding wife and is the type of guy who you would be proud to call your friend. I will be going back over there tomorrow to check on him and will post up any information I get afterwords.

My prayer? Dear God, please dont take my friend.

Also, say a prayer for his wife too, I got to the hospital to see her wearing a heart monitor also. She is having some sort of problem with her ticker too. They need each other and thier kids need them both also.

A-fib is atrial fibrillation. It is a rapid disorganizied contraction of the smaller chambers of the heart. There are many causes. Joe will be fine although he may have to change things a little. I read that as many as 2 million people have some form of a-fib. My mom lived 30 years with a form of it before she had a day surgery to eliminate it.

Wait for a diagnosis, then be around for him and support him because he may need new meds, and change his lifestyle a bit. All of that can be kind of depressing. On top of that, this scares people and sometimes they get depressed or want to withdraw because they just don't know when they'll "flip".

Most people just go on with a normal life.

Still I'll be praying for Joe.

You know, I have a friend who is doing Chemotherapy now and she is struggling. A while ago I asked someone, what ever happened to the days when the worst thing that could happen would be someone was pregnant.

We grew up when we were not watching and now we have grown up problems...

I don't want to loose my friend either. I know how scary that is every day.

Remember, every day is a gift and nobody ever said on thier death bed, "gee, I wish I had worked more".

Love each other today, in fact, love each other right now.

positive thoughts from Big D... hoping everything is ok.

A-fib is not that bad, they will hook him up with some meds, and it will all be good, the wife is just stressing over the husband. True about nobody ever saying I wish I had worked more. Had an elderly patient tell me that you don't regret the things you have done, jus the things you have not done, go play with your kids
flatout
Sounds like a super guy.My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Positive thoughts from the Pacific Northwest!

Not a good week. My 75 year old mother fell at home and dislocated her shoulder this last Sunday). She fainted for some reason. TIA is the medical term. She should be out of the hospital in a day or two.

Events like these make other clitches (like the engine in my teener going Ka-Blammo! - also on Sunday) seem pretty trivial.

Best wishes to Joe and his family!

Thanks Dave, I was going to talk to one of our doctor clients today who I am sure will be looking in on him since he is right there. As for his wife stressing, she had the monitor on for a few days already, it is totally unrelated. If anything, Joe is having the stress. He loves his wife very much. I am jealous sometimes of thier relationship. He is like Barbie, has everything I never seem to get. I am going to go check on him when I get done with a few jobs I have this morning and will report back in later today.

Get well NOW, Joe. We need you smilie_pokal.gif

I have been living with a-fib for about ten years now. The first episode scared the stromberg.gif out of me and I took an ambulance ride to the hospital, where they tried drugs....didn't work, so the bastards electricuted me!
Saw heart specialist, and did lotsa tests...
After that I did my own research and found out that it is generally non life threatening, and the drugs do more harm than good.
I was getting episodes about two or three times a month that lasted from six to twelve hours. (Heart rate at 200 BPM) They always occured at night, and messed up my sleep. In my case it was caused by high blood pressure.
I changed my life style...less coffee, salt and alchohol, walk briskly about five miles a day for exercise...lost 20 lbs, which reduced the blood pressure and the last episode was about a year ago, and it only lasted about an hour.
I hope this helps ease your mind on this condition.
I am also taking Altace (10mg) and low dose aspirin (81mg) per day

Scott,

Please give my best to Joe when you see him. I remember meeting him at your house for Alan's lightoff party. He was extremely friendly and very much enjoyed his post as the SoCal BBQ Meister. Great man with a great wife. They are both in my families prayers. Please keep us posted. Thank you.

rolleyes.gif Scott...Joe will be fine...Atrial Fibrillation is not that big a deal. He may be able to be cardioverted out of it and then put on some meds to keep it away. And like some of the others said...diet, exercise, meds...he'll be just fine.

Don't worry! But if they want to do a Heart Cath...let me know...'tis what I do ya know wink.gif

In my prayers!

As a couple of others have said, A-Fib. I was diagnosed with it in mid 2001. I went through several different types of medication and several jump starts (cardio-version) over the last few years to get me back in heart rhythm. I'd be fine for a month, maybe two, one time as long as six months, but it kept coming back. Last year I had a form of surgery know as catheter ablation. It is NOT open heart and has a very good success rate. I was in and out of the hospital in 24 hours. On the 13th of this month (August) I celebrated my one year anniversary of staying in rhythm. If the meds don't do it for your friend I highly recommend the procedure. After four years of suffering with A-Fib I had almost forgotten how nice it is to feel good, to feel normal. I have had that pleasure for a little over a year now, and it's great!

My prayers are with him. I know first hand it is no fun to be in A-Fib.

My Prayers are in for Joe and his family...My good friend Bob Cosso has AF and has had the catheter ablation surgery. Joe will be fine- some lifestyle changes are due for him. Let's get him through this and celebrate at your house (or how about a 914 gathering at Twinkle Park?) again with a group gathering. Set the date and we'll all pitch in for the festivities. Dave Hall

Hi Joe,

I figure by now you will be reading this thread.

Yes I have prayed for you.

Yes, I still have heart Burn from the last BBQ at your house.

You are exceptionaly ugly. (Like Scott)

I really like you. Cause you are simply a good man.

Your food rocks.

Your wife and kids rock.

Fix the medical problem.

Let me finish tuning the V8 Teener.

Lastly, We all love ya.... Cause your worth it.

I had a catheter ablation when I was 22. If that's all it takes to make Joe's ticker better, that's an easy fix. I had mild SVT (supraventricular tachycardia) episodes for about a year after the procedure, and then it went away completely. I'm hoping and praying for the best for Joe and his wife. Please keep us posted, Scott. And send them our best.

Bad thing happen to good people.

Good people do bad things to themselves.

My Dad smoked and drank for most of his life until he started getting arythmia.

Stanford Medical had to shock his heart back into rhythm.

Docs said if he didn't quit smoking and drinking he would die.

15 years later and he's still kicking. He quit smoking and drinking, thank God, and I still have my Dad. =-) And he picked up bike riding and walking....

I believe they will be just fine. Prayers out to your family. And don't have a drink on me beerchug.gif ... Have a hug on me. grouphug.gif =-))))

I' just glad he's getting this warning sign and not getting that "E" ticket ride into the sky. I know a guy who's a lot younger who got that E ticket..... 32 years old.

Hey joe, too bad we cant do a V8 conversion on your heart.

-Matt

Hang in there bud. You know we're here to help you out.
Katmanken
Yup,

Bad things do happen to good people. I have a lot of first hand experience.

Joe, this is your wake up call.... Take better care of yourself.

Better this than something unexpected and more serious later.

As to why bad things happen- its for a reason. Good can ccme out of the bad things- it's just not apparent when it happens.

In life, everyone gets their turn in the barrel. It's not pleasant or fun, but struggle through it and keep being a good person. Enjoy the rest of your life and especially what you have. As my wife says- "the best things in life are not things"

Sometimes I even listen to her.... happy11.gif

Joe! Glad you are back home from the hospital...did you get a sponge bath from an attentive nurse? Get some rest and get well! DH

Glad you will be OK.

Take the steps you need to take - we need people like you around.

Spent 4 gays in the hospital couple years ago - friggin nurses never let you sleep - even had one would not give me my pain pill till it was *time* - and I WAS in agony (shattered ankle).

Get well and listen and research what they say.

Joe,

Glad to hear that you're home and hope you are feeling better.

A coulpe of months ago, my wife's father had open heart surgery to replace a valve, as well as a couple of bypasses.
He spent a week in the hospital and two more weeks in a rehab
center after that. He developed a murmur and had to return to the hospital to get that corrected. For an 81 year old guy, he's doing better now.

My mother-in-law, during that week of the surgery, fell in the hospital and injured her back. She's now undergoing treatment for that. Still waiting to see how she does.

Last week, my wife was diagnoised with adult onset diabeties.
For now, the doctor feels she can control this with diet and meds.

Needless to say, this has not been a very good year for us. Too much on our minds to enjoy life. Hpoefully next year will be better.

Take care of yourself.
Twystd1
Joe,
I am a little embarased here....

But I have to tell you the truth.

You have to better care of yourself for me.

Cause I STILL haven't stole that last BBQ recipe from you...

FURTHERMORE:

I will come over and eat all the bad shit for you.

That way you can stay healthy and happy for your children and your self...

Let's start with the Tri tip... I will be over very soon to get rid of that bad beef for you.

I just told Dorothy whaZZ up with you. She sends her love and support. In fact she is coming over with me to eat ALL that bad stuff around your house. biggrin.gif

AND:

Let me know when ya wanna finish tuning the V8 Teener.

PLUS:

The shop with the DYNO I told you about was Superior Automotive in Anaheim.
The owners name is Joe Jill.
Use my name and he will charge ya double. (my cut included) Superior Automotive

Give Joe Jill a call and report back to us on what you find out. ($s etc.)

Joe knows his shit... Period. He has a couple (3) chassis dynos and enough electronics to kill a cow. And for the stock teenr. he has a fuel injector machine to measure flow. He can clean em and flow em to give you a matching set.

He also has a Dizzy machine to re-spec curves. (nice)

I wish the guy built Type IVs.

FINALLY:

Call me if need anything. Scotty, Aaron, Matt and the crew have my phone number.

Best wishes again brother...

Clayton

Man, I take a break from studying to find this! Joe, stop stressing Cherry out, ya big galute. I am glad that you are not dying on us. You are gonna have to hold on a few more years before I can get you the Dr discount.

Speaking of hearts, I had my hands around a dandy today. It was the size of a cows heart because of hypertrophy. It was soo big it shrunk one of the lungs to an itty bitty size. It had a double bypass with a pace maker, too. Neat stuff. Donate your bodies to science people! We need you chowtime.gif

Joe,

Gather as much information on AF that you can. The good news is that much information is known about the electrophysics of your heart. Some AF can be treated with medication, otherwise a pacing device can be installed. The heart is a muscle that can heal with lifestyle improvements, a healthy diet, and the love of your friends. Dean Ornish MD has a few good books on the subject.

Glad you're home and improving!!! Cheryl and I will keep you and your family in our thoughts.

Kind Regards,
Rob
