I know the answer should be obvious and that it is probably staring me in the face but....For the life of me, I can't figure out what this big hole in in the bulkhead in front of the fuel tank on my '73 GT conversion project is for. Help please.

Provides access to bottom of fuel tank for filter changes

large enough to get your hand in there when you have to.
rjames
There should be a plastic piece that fits over ~3/4 of the lower edge so you're not scraping your hand up or nicking a fuel line should you have to pull some of it out.

Once you get the tank back in, use the access opening to feel if you've got a line kinked.

Thanks guys.

That works best with long-enough enough fuel lines to pull the filter out of the hole.

And a kinked fuel line in that area will leave you on the side of the road wondering WTF.gif

Optional hole plug. Have to measure hole size though. Quick grab.

Now that is a clever idea. Just ordered one. Standard 4 in. Thanks for the tip.

I actually made a second account that I log into at the shop. I don’t have a lot of secrets but I still don’t want the guys reading my pm’s.

What holds the acoustic guitar plug in place ? I assume it’s pushed up from under the car.

The purpose of the hole is to make it bigger laugh.gif

I need to get one of those plugs. Good way to keep critters out.

And, are all the holes 4” in diameter. Seems like my ‘75 might be smaller

I'd be surprised if a German car manufacturer made anything other than metric holes.

I added a drain valve to my tank and it sticks out a little bit, so I made a little box to cover the hole…..anti-rodent device!

I agree but if they did a 100mm hole, it makes sense that a 4” plastic cap would pop into place.

After i posted that i did a quick conversion to see what 4" in mm would be and it's close enough to 100mm that a 4" plug should work OK.

I just installed the “guitar hole plug’; it’s definitely a good fit.
But I got to thinking the plug will not allow fuel fumes to escape…anyone else this could be a problem ?

There's drain hose for the fumes/overflow/spill which should stick out the bottom.
