I looked at this when I went to the Cayman 6 speed. You can't remove the ends. They are crimped onto the cable.

I used Numeric shift cables.

They are not cheap, but they use really nice joints on the ends of the cables, and they are removable.

Another thing... on my car, I ran them through the speedo cable and shift rod openings on the firewall. But to do it, I had to turn the flanges down on the shifter end of the cables.

That involved fitting a long piece of pipe to the back of the lathe to support the cables, and spinning the lathe VERY slowly while removing the flange.

Then once they were through and in the car, I just put another nut on the cable to anchor it to the shifter.

What I thought I would try if the rod is soft enough,cut the end off and thread it with a die. They are 6mm in diameter.
Whoa!,,,I guess they are pricey! Yeah,gonna try threading them!

+1 on the Numeric cables. Shifts like silk.
