How many of them were made? What exactly is the difference between them and the M-471? What's the history? I feel like I should know these things, but I don't. smile.gif
buck toenges
were the 916 rocker panel fg or steel? Also since the tops were steel does the factory still have the molds for it?
MoveQik
Andy - you show a pic of a 74. Did they make a 74 916? I thought there were only 11 or 12 or so and they were earlier.
Gustl
it doesn't show a '74 916 ... it shows 914.2.33.0020 in '74
this pic ist just to figure out the repaint of this car - it left factory silver/orange ...

all 916 were made in late 1971 => MJ 1972
therefore they have 914.2.33.00xx VINs (only the prototype car has 914.1.43.0195)

just take a look to my 916 run down

Targa
Why do some have front side markers, and also why do some have rear bumpers with a single exhaust cutout and others have dual outlets?
SirAndy

Why do some have front side markers

because otherwise they wouldn't be streetlegal in the US ...

ze ugly sidemarker-pimples are US only.

Interesting Is there a spec sheet of what options were available on the 916's?

Was the 916 US side marker installed at the dealer huge differance where these are placed on these two cars?

So some 916 were 6's and some 4's or all them 6's? I thought all were 6's?

I called on #18 back when it was advertised for sale, around 2006 I think. The asking price was $300,000! The motor had just been opened and refreshed according to the seller's rep, but everything else was as original. I have quite a few pictures of this 916 from the Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca from the '90's and the metallic blue paint with the cork interior is just stunning in person. Last I heard this 916 was sold and went back to Austria.

No Spec Sheet as there were only a few cars

916's were Euro Cars, but the Silver One was brought over to Brumos by Peter Gregg. so the Side Marker was added. This car is the only one with A/C, but they had to cut a hole in the bulkhead to fit the Compressor. The Interior has also been changed out.

All 916's were 6s, but they have different displacements - 2.2, 2.4 & 2.7. The 916s were built on 914-4 Chassis

There were also two 914-8s Built - one for Ferdinand Porsche & one for Piech

The 916s were built on 914-4 Chassis so the VIN is not like the 914-6 VINs

confused24.gif confused24.gif confused24.gif
All models (914-4, 914-6, 916) are based on the same chassis construction so
the VIN indicates only the series and the factory modifications.

My 72 -6 is a -4? confused24.gif

I would say that only the steering column is different but all other is
a -6 and the VIN is -6 too.

916 models are also -6 with an independent number row because it is not
a 914-6.
916 have only the look like a 914

They were all 6s.

The confusion comes from the fact that at least one of them has signs of /4 motor mounts that were removed by Porsche prior to building the car.

Just post a wanted ad, that's what I did, picked up a used 916 front and rear bumper and rear spoiler for $100 biggrin.gif but shipping was another $105. mad.gif Paint was beat and a couple of small holes/cracks but worth the time to fix for only $100 or so. Just becare full al lot of the 916 bumper I saw for sale didn't have the bumper brackets on them so you either have to make your own or fiberglass them onto the body.
