If one uses a small cap disributor; Do you still have to cut out a notch in the rear truck for clearance?

You should, there would not be much clearance otherwise. I have seen them where they dont but had problems with arcing of the wires on the body.

The cap by itself will clear but after the wires are installed it'll be a tight fit. In addition you won't have the option of pulling the distributor with the engine in the car.
