Hey guys:
A Bursch exhaust came with my pile-o-parts with my car.
It says 914 73-74 on the sticker, but it doesn't look like it'll
fit my car (76). It's got 2 inlets on each side and there is only 1
outlet on each side on my car.
It looks like a really good setup that would look cool on my
car, but I'm not sure I could make it work. Any ideas??
My current setup has a resonator and a muffler and it looks
like crap (rusty). The Bursch setup only has 1 muffler (I think).
I'm also wondering what emissions issues one might have with
this arrangement if I could put it on my car.
Any info on this would be appreciated.
Thanks!! pray.gif

Hi,

75-76 HE's are different than earlier HE's. Easier to backdate. Your halfway there.

Find the 73-74 Stainless steel heat exchangers and use the Bursch. You will pick up 7 hp with the change over.

you will need a set of bellows/ valves, assorted j tubes, and branch pieces. you should be at the swap meet. you'd be 75% there parts wise.

As you said, the 75-76 has a muffler and a resonator. The California models had a catalitic converter between these while all others had a straight flanged pipe. If you don't have the cat I don't think changing mufflers or heat exchangers will affect emissions. The 75-76 exchangers are unloved for a reason. If you can find the parts, backdate to 73-74 2.0L heat exchangers with the Bursch. You'll probably like it.

Andy,

Make sure which Bursch you have. If it just says "73-74", it is probably for 1.7-1.8 HEs. The 2 litre exhaust usually has a sticker that says, "73-74 2.0".

Aw CRAP!
I just did a double check and it does NOT say 2.0L anywhere on the sticker.
Does this mean that I can't even use this even if I changed to the earlier HEs?
Man, that would suck!!
Thanks for the replies guys!

Hi Carlos:
I wish my pile-o-parts was a whole car... although the missus wouldn't like it!
All I have is the Bursch part. I'll have to take another look at my pile-o-parts.
The other issue for me is the emmisions. I live outside of Milwaukee, WI and we
do have fairly strict emmisions requirements.
Anyway, for now I'm just trying to get my 914 running. It hasn't been started
in over 4 years! I just got the gas tank back from being boiled and sealed inside.
I am going to put it in tomorrow and maybe try to fire her up this week!
Wish me luck!
Thanks,
