Here's a question of philosophy and possibly
skills. I still have the steel rockers from my -6
although they have some pinholes and such
from the same dirt that messed up my jack
posts before I bought it.

Last year I picked up some good condition
fiberglass ones at Hershey for $50, but I now
have a welder and some time on my hands,
should I try to strip the steel ones, weld a
bit, smooth and use those? I have a feeling
putting the fiberglass ones on is going to take
some different rivets and might not look the
same.

Not a big deal either way, but what does
anybody think?
Thanks,
Mark S.

since you have a -6 I would say fix the metal ones, or get some better metal ones.

If you decide to try and repair your steel panels....practice on something else first...the metal is awful thin and you'll blow right thru it if not careful

Yeah, I've been practicing with 22ga and it's tricky to not
melt away the edge of a lap joint. But I can do it, and holes
are easier. Will I be able to use a little bondo and not have
it come off from twisting just from installing the rockers?

Might be a better use of time/money to just buy another clean set of steel ones. I bought a pair here in SoCal last year for $30~

Marc,

unless you really really want to practice welding and smoothing.. just buy another set and sell your FG rockers. Leave it stock. You have a nice car that deserves nice steel rockers.

Thanks, all. Given that I have nothing to lose yet, I will see what
the time-factor is to welding up what I have. At least here in the
east, there are apparently no steel rockers anywhere to be
bought (been to hershey), much less for $30. I will try to avoid
buying some new ones, as I'm 'professionally-challenged' for now.

Give Gary Emory a call at parts obsolete
or Jim at EASY Im sure they would be happy to ship you a pair and save you the trouble of welding yours.

EASY: (510) 653-3279

Parts Obsolete: 503-835-2300

I bet it wont cost more than 100 bucks delivered(albeit good used ones)

If you insist on fixing your rocker panels...find a thick sheet of brass to place on the backside of the panel while you weld...the melting steel will not weld itself to the brass

(hardware store or hobby shop has brass sheets)
