Curious if a '85.5+ 944 steering whel will fit a 914 hub. Anyone know if the splines are the same? confused24.gif

I've tried this and the answer is no on the 944 four spoke wheel I tried.

944 wheel has different splines

911 wheel (up to 89) has the same splines, but different offset

944 does have a larger diameter shaft.

However, it is big enough that it can be turned down, cut to length and re-splined.

I did it on my street car
had a machine shop re-spline it for me and use a 4 spoke 944 (non-airbag) wheel on my teener.

you have to shorten the shaft and measure twice so that the wheel fits nicely up to the dash.

True.... but its the only porsche 4 spoke wheel'd 914 I've ever seen....

and it was more about trying to do something (sense of accomplishment) than it was about being easy

Drat I thought mine was too!! biggrin.gif
I went the other route and attached another hub to the 944 wheel....but the leather wasn't too good and now have a 911 four spoke. Its worth doing as it feels just right.

It might be easier to just take that portion of the steering column out of a late 944 and try to make them mate up. 85.5-on had the 4-spoke wheel, [i *think*] 90s on they got airbags driver/passenger. I guess then you'd need the steering collar and ignition switch stuff... hmm...

Maybe just take the splined end, cut it off, weld it onto the 914 column?
