I just bought a porsche 914 2.0, lost title and I have a bill of sale. I bought it as a 1974 but wanted to make sure thats what I have. This numbers is along the windsheild on the drivers side 4742905917 There is a plate under the hood on the passenger side headlight case the only number on it that i can make out is 474. Another tag in drivers side door jam is 4239550. I bought this car as is, and it needs a head ($1500.00 is what I paid for car), was thinking it was just gonna need a head gasket.... but it needs the head and the jug under head. I know I prob got screwed, but really wanted the car. This is my first porshe, will post some pics after I get the head and get it home. Thanks for any info offered. I live in Georgia about 70 miles south of Atlanta
Thx

Welcome to the club!

Usually the 47 stands for the chassis type (karmann, I believe) and the 4 would stand for the year of manufacture if I remember correctly. So, if the first three numbers are 474, that means it's a 74! (same as mine).

Looking forward to seeing your pics!

Since the heads are aluminum, they can be repaired...might be costly, but they can be repaired.

Which head....driver or passenger? The passenger side will have the threads for the CHT on your fuel injection.

When you say you need the jug & head, you are saying it dropped a valve, destroyed the piston, cylinder and head....correct?

Welcome to the insanity.......

Well Im no mechanic, but it kinda blew out where the head gasket goes, messed up the head and what you bolt it to. Its on the passegers side

burned a hole is what it sounds like. Take both heads to Len at Hoffman Machine in

Athens, GA for evaluation. 2.0L can be tricky to repair.

Steve: Welcome to the Garage.
The numbers on the windshield tag should read the same as the decal on the rear of the drivers door jamb and they are stamped into the inner fender wheelwell at the top in a flat spot. All those numbers should match. Post the numbers that you find please.

Open the front deck, look at the top of the wheel well (INSIDE the front trunk). There should be a # stamped into the top of the passenger side wheel well. It should match the windshield ID and the REAR door jamb sticker on the driver's side.

Since the door jamb sticker if frequently removed for repaint, don't worry if it's gone.
