Can anybody tell me the difference between these two distributors? do they use the same cap/rotor?
Brando
Jan 18 2006, 05:02 AM
Same cap and rotor for both.
009 is a centrifugal (centriFRUGAL for us CSOBs) advance, 22º full advance.
050 is I *think* centrifugal and vacuum advance.

Jan 18 2006, 06:19 AM
Nope nope and nope.
different rotor and cap both are mechanical no vacuum on either. At least the ones I have.
My 050 suffers from bad bushings I think that is the only reason I switched to 009. I think the curve is much different and I remember feeling a big difference in acceleration. 009 has a "whack kick you in the back" as it comes to full advance. I'm jonesing for a Mallory but I also need new Hoosier Slicks for F Prepared class
tat2dphreak
Jan 18 2006, 08:33 AM
also, the 050 has been unavailable for quite some time... I think the 050 has more of a maximum advance.
Joe's right though, Mallory is supposed to be the way to go!

Different cap, rotor, and condenser. Different advance curve, different total advance (17 degrees vs. 32 degrees). They look different, too. Other than that, they're the same. The Cap'n

Holy crap the Capt. and I agree. Better not let my Navy buddies here.
SO which one has the 32 degrees advance? Maybe I should rebuild the 050.

That picture and part number is for a stock 1.8L distributor. The 009 that is sold aftermarket does NOT have a vacuum advance on it.
It's real easy to get confused. The part number for the 1.8L distributor ends in 009, but it's not the 009 that we refer to when we talk about the "float test".

0 231 174 009 = VW 039 905 205
It is interchangeable with..
0 231 174 011 which was used on the VW 2L and the Porsche 2L = 039 905 205
AThe 009 fitted to the 1.8L Porsche
08/73 to 07/74 ....Bosch Part# 0 231 181 009 = VW 022 905 205 AA
(interchangeable with 0 231 168 005 = VW 021 905 205 P
08/74 up .............Bosch Part # 0 231 176 048 = VW 021 905 205 AB
And of the 009/050 Centrifugals..there is the good one (German) and the shitty one (Brazilian). I'm not gonna look for the Bosch part number on these.

VW never used D-jet on the 2 litre engines fitted to any vehicles sold in the USA, and likely the ROW. This distributor is NOT used in VWs, only Porsches. Neither is the "011". The Cap'n

Well Cap'n....no argument with me....you can argue with the Bosch ESI....'cause the Bosch number translates to the VW & Porsche application as shown according to their CD.
Up to 07/74 on the 914 2.0L, Bosch supplied 0 231 174 011
From 08/74 on the 914 2.0L, Bosch supplied 0 231 172 021
USA Models - 70 kW - 08/72 thru 12/75
Bosch also shows a 914 with no country desigination but producing 74 kW which used the 0 231 174 011
The bus was a guess as it didn't show fitting the Porsche.

009 was "the original VW performance distributor" and I believe had a built-in retard for the #3 cylinder in the pre "dog-house" cooler days. The 050 came later and was also centrifugal but had no #3 retarding and the larger advance- at least tto my understanding.

Actually, the "009" that we're discussing was originally designed for, and installed on, industrial engines which generally run at a single steady RPM. Their short advance curve allows them to be easily started and they reach full operating RPM and advance early. Performance in between idle and operating speed is of no consequence, nor are emissions levels. The dreaded "flat spot" is meaningless on an industrial engine. The Cap'n

Oil cooler on the old type 1 was inside the cooling shroud. Pre-heated the air on the 3,4 side. #3 cylinder has always been the "hottest" and there fore a weakness. Lots of problems with "pulled" #3head studs in the old cases. I remember these cool self tapping head studs that enabled repair without a complete tear down. Builders used to reinforce the older cases' webbing around the #3 studs inside the case and installed threaded inserts for the studs before VW redesigned and fixed the problem. Anyway, the original stock distributors had this built in #3 retard to make that cylinder run cooler. I was informed years ago that the 009 had this feature also. Later designs may have made this unnecessary. Incidentally, the stock carbs were always a little rich which also promoted cooler running.
Joe, the mill is together but not installed yet. Finishing up the 5-lug conversion in the rear- taking a bit more time than I thought it would.
