What is the metal tubing that runs around the fuel injection hoses in the engine compartment and attaches to all four cyllinder heads? Do I need to keep this stuff around? Any input appreciated, as it's definitely not on my 74 1.8. Steve

air injection? wouldn't throw it out, even if not needed for smog testing in your state. might come in handy if you decide to sell sometime in the future.

What is air injection, and how does it work to reduce smog?

Yep, it's the air injection system. It's part of the emissions system. If you don't have required testing in your area it can be removed but you have to plug the ports on the heads.

What do people typically use to plug the holes? Do you need to tap them and run bolts in? There's no emission inspections at all in central virginia for any car. Steve

unless you are having problems with it, leave it alone....you have a good chance of screwing something up by trying to remove it.....
air gets injected to help further burn any fuel that might be in the exhaust........

its already tapped (whats else is holding the injectors in?). iirc, 10mm fine thread, but easy to confirm

I had to take the majority of it off to remove the intake manifold and intake pipes. I now have four short little pipes approximately 3 inches or so that stick up from the cyllinder which lie to either side of the injectors which were mounted in the ends of the intake pipes where they dump into the heads. Do these short little pipes need to be removed to take off the engine tin? (BTW, the engine is out of the car on a stand right now).

yes, you'll have to remove the pipes.....there have been a few write-ups on the removal and what to install in there place....
air injection "fix"???? try searching with key words of air AND injection AND/OR plug for more threads....

I used the valve adjust screw to plug mine with a liberal application of JB weld.
Hope the new owner never needs to remove them.

I also have a '75 and get to your town often if you want another set of eyes or opinions. My air pump is still installed but the belt is off (it sits near the firewall on the engine on top of the fan shroud).
