PO mounted these rectangular lights which I'm not to crazy about. I would like to get a set of Pilot lights from CAMP, and cut out the holes to mount them behind the spoiler. I've looked behind it, but can't figure out how I would mount them. The spoiler is blended into the flares, so it's not coming off, making this more of a challenge. Anyone have ideas or pictures of what they have done?

I just put a pair of Camp's excellent Pilot lights on my 914 with a 916 bumper.

On your car, did the owner cut out the bumper to mount those square lights?

If so, then you'd have a heck of a time "recreating" the proper openings.

Anyways, even if not, you would have a HECK of a time getting the Pilots mounted correctly without getting the bumper off.

It would be absolutely impossible to simply hole saw 4.5 inch opening holes and mount the lights using the factory style mounting brackets with the bumper in place. No access.

One possible way would be to holesaw an opening large enough so the light can slide in from the outside. Not sure what size that would have to be, but it would be a bit bigger than the 4.5 inch hole saw that I used, and a bit bigger than I would prefer for looks. 5.0 might do it, though.

Then, you'd have limited access right behind the opening. You'd have to fabricate some kind of trick "clip in" bracket, where the light could be pushed into it and "clipped in" from the outside. Bolt that custom bracket in place, and clip the light in.

The square lights are just mounted to the spoiler - right where I would cut the hole for the Pilot lights. Not having seen them, I think there might be enough clearence to get them in from the backside, although you bring up a very interesting point. Once I cut the holes out, and get the lights back there, I just don't see anything to mount them to.

you cant get acess from underneath?

if not - then your kinda hosed....

there is like a 17mm head bolt that the stock lights mounted to....

I can not access my stock foglights without removing my 916 bumper. You may need to cut through some sheetmetal.

I have a 916 bumper with the Camp914 Pilot lights installed, there is no way you can install them without taking the bumper off. We also had to modify the mounting point so it would line up with the round sections on the 916 bumper.

Right, the problem isn't getting the lights behind the bumper - you'd have to holesaw an opening for them anyways, and if you used probably a 4.75 inch or so hole saw, you'd be able to simply push them in.

The problem is then how do you bolt them down?

One way I just thought of would be to get a photo showing exactly where the stock mounting bolt is located. Then use a small hole saw (an inch or so) to make an opening right over that spot. That would probably give you enough room to get the light mounted in the factory manner.

Although I had to modify my Pilot bracket on one side to get it to work. The other side worked fine. Probably just an issue with my particular car/916 bumper. But for both sides, it took quite a bit of adjusting to get them just right and how I wanted it.

It would have been very tedious and frustrating doing that with the bumper in place, using only a small access hole. But it probably could have been done.

Although of course then you'd have to fill those holes and paint. Filling the holes wouldn't be hard, but painting . . .

I'd keep trying to think of something, though!

Gotta hate Dreaded Previous Owners. Those big rectangular lights bolted to the OUTSIDE of the 916 bumpers must look like freeze dried azz in real life!

Here's one other thought- The previous owner of my car had left the bumper uncut and simply screwed in 4 inch round trailer light lenses in that spot using 3 small screws!

Looked like lights were there (I thought they were, at first).

stock fog-light mounting point, accessable from underneath. there just enough space between the 916 bumper and the car to get a wrench in there. a bit tricky but doable ...

Andy, is your car still at Mark's shop? If so, maybe I'll go down and take a look at where your lights are mounted. When I look under there, I don't see anything except the horns.

Yup, in the pic above look just inboard of the dog bone shapes to the flat spots toward the bottom. The bolts are actually still in there.

I found that using a hex headed bolt allows you to use a long allen wrench to adjust the foglight, so maybe a small hole under the light might give you enough access. Once you remove the old rectangular lights, you will probably have to look around.

The flared in look is neat but rather a pain. If it ever has to be redone, go with the stock removable bumper and valance (0r 916 style), and life will be easier.
