Two weeks off from school, and so in between work and fixing the 300D I found some time for myself.

Took to the rear section and handled some long overdue corrosion.

Then pulled the rear suspension to get powder coated.

Next to get that old exhaust off in preparation for the new one that will go on before the rear end goes back in. Fix the shift bushing at the firewall and dick around with the rockers again while there's room.

change oil, install new temp sender to match combi guage.
scrub scrub scrub

and then wait to do the front end.

got alot done, but i had help this time.

check it out.

anyone know a shop that can do a bitchin job fixing this?
I knew someone, but they have moved.
brer
primed until a real fix can be done.

shocks out and getting cleaned,

165lb. springs to be going in
brer
trailing arms out.
brer
stripped of hubs and bearings.
shame too as the bearings looked new.

Question though:

How to get the bushings out of the trailing arms?
Have some polybronze to go back in but cant see an obvious way to do it.
McMark
Use a section of metal tube that will fit over the threads and hammer the pivot out the bottom. Then pull the rubbers out. It's a little more complicated in practice, but that's what I did.
brer
Got em off with the help of Don and his blow torch.
Wouldn't budge with just a hammer.

made it hot enough to smoke and they came right out.
I'm thinking the one bushing was the source of my rear suspension clunk.

grasshopper
hey Brer, how did you get the bigass bolt off of the rear hub??? I have a damn six foot pole and It wont break that thing loose... ar15.gif
Aaron Cox

WE?

does that mean you'll help. beer.gif

and i got the big nut off the way i always do.
put on the breaker bar and a six foot pole

get your friend to sit on the pole

tap the assembly with a steel object until it breaks loose

constant application of force + vibration = smilie_pokal.gif

got the engine out.

leakdown test showed 8% on 1, 2, 4 9-10% on 3
that was with the motor stone cold, no sounds coming from anywhere but the oil filler.

everyones heard of a subaru motor in a 914

I prefer this

anyone need an exhaust?
brer
trailing arms looking nearly there
bushings in, ready to be drilled for zirc fittings

have been trying all night to get the bearings to sink in using the threaded rod trick, but they keep wandering and not going in right
whats the trick?

brer
looking at the bearings this morning i noticed there was some powder residue in the trailing arms. Took some of this stuff, used on my stainless pans, and polished the residue out of the arm. Worked like a charm. Bearings are in.

and the rockers????

dont have an adjustable pushrod yet.

maybe i should use a stick and slowly file it down on the sidewalk until i get the right length.

Stipped the block.
Lots of Gooey stuff.

went fairly smoothly, save for twisting two of the cheese heads Heads off. mad.gif
Suppose i'll need to figure out how to pull them out now.

Possibly a leaking front seal????

Next is cleanup, powder coat the tin.
Possibly flame spray the heating tubes as recommended, we'll see what that costs.

Pulling the heads soon, to be dropped off and examined.
Two exhaust valves are sitting higher than the others, not sure why but seems like the time to sort that out.... before i cut the new pushrods.

anyone know the secret recipe for pushrod tube seals that dont leak? Please share if you do.. chowtime.gif

Moved ahead on the motor again today... and after minor injuries i was able to get the heads off and see what it looked like in there. Didn't seem too bad.

lifters looked nearly new.
cylinders had a couple of broken fins sad.gif
heads are alright looking, newish, but with two exhuast valves sitting about 20 thou higher than the rest.
two case studs turned a little taking the heads off so they will need to be put back in properly.
pushrods were straight, but two had wear marks from the bails
has low compression pistons... would be nice to change ( wavey.gif )

heads are going in for inspection
need to get some cylinders
have a look at the pics
