Ok, just picked up my refurbed distributer from the FLAPS. I've got a question on the part number that is imprinted on the distributer. I have a '75 2.0L right now, just for information.

Here's what I got from the FLAPS...Is this one ok to use?
0 231 172 009
311 905 205 AE

Isn't that 311 number from a type 3 engine?

By the way, this thing came with new points, condenser and FI trigger points. The vacuum canister is just repainted silver, cheesy looking.

Comparing it to my old dizzy, the shaft is nice and tight, with no slop....man, I didn't realize my old one was so bad....

Oh by the way...the FI trigger points, contact points and condenser do not appear to be Bosch units.

Sounds like a type 3 one to me.

The 1.7 dizzys I have sitting here are 022 950 205 E and F's.

Yes I just looked blink.gif

They list a: 0 231 174 009 as a 2.0 914

All but 2 of the 009 sufix are for 914's

We normally go by the bottom number (VW)on the dizzy hence the 039 which denotes 2.0L.

If you are going by the Bosch numbers I am toast.

I finally found some information...


Type 3 1972 * 1600 Fuel Injected Manual Trans

Note: Bosch shows this distributor to be installed through April 1972 which may be incorrect. VW shows this distributor to be installed throughout the 1972 model year in North America.

Distributor: VW 311-905-205AE, Bosch 0231 172 009
Replacement: Same
Points: 01 011
Condensor: 02 054
Rotor: 04 006
Cap: 03 001
Coil: 00 015 (Blue Coil 00 012)
Vacuum Can: 07 100
FI Trigger Points Assembly: 1230 090 000
Ignition Wires: 09 004
Spark Plug: W8AC
Timing Set At: 5deg BTDC @ 800-950rpm w/strobe w/both vacuum hoses disconnected and plugged. When finished with timing and hoses plugged in, possible readjustment of idle to 850-900rpm may be needed.

Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 8-12deg Adv, 9-10deg Ret; Centrifugal: 11-16deg @ 1800rpm, 19-23deg @ 4000rpm


Looks like I should be bringing it back tomorrow after work and getting another....for the price, I doubt they recurved it.

Flipping through my giant Bosch Engine Management catalog (gotta love working at a parts store) shows that 0 231 172 009 was for a 1972 Fastback or Squareback. So yes, it's a Type 3 distributor. As to whether it's a good replacement or not, I can't say.

Now I want to go and check the replacement unit I got. But I seem to remember the numbers being sandblasted off. Maybe I'll pull it tomorrow if I've got a few spare minutes.

Well, I just mail-ordered mine last night. I'll be sure to check it when it gets here. At the Advance Auto Parts counter they said they couldn't even order one, but the website let me.....I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Let us know what it is when you get it. I'm returning mine today and will try to get them to order another. It's a shame since it appeared everything on THIS dizzy seemed to be there and in good shape. Except for the vacuum canister. It was a little sticky with it's motion.

I don't care for the look of the bead blasting of the dizzy's. My old one is so much more purdy.

I returned the dizzy and got a refund. My FLAPS called another FLAPS, in Phoenix I believe, and had them physically check the numbers of the one they had in stock. It was the same as the one I had purchased, 311 905 205AE, for a Type 3. So that is not encouraging.

Geoff, you stated that this 311 dizzy didn't have enough advance. Looking at the 311 dizzy information above, aren't the numbers 11-16deg @ 1800RPM and 19-23deg @ 4000RPM closer to the 039 dizzy than the 022 is to a 039?

I wonder if anyone has put one of these rebuilt units on a "dizzy dyno" (what ever the hell they are called) and verified the curves. It would be interesting to see if these things are recurved or not when they are rebuilt.

Well, off to the next step...what ever that is.

Have you tried taking your old dizzy to a P-car mechanic to have it rebuilt? The guy I deal with has been able to get me every Porsche part I've needed so far so I'm guessing that he could probably rebuild the distributor with the right parts too.

For a real rebuilt 2.0L dizzy call Ottos. You can have your dizzy rebuilt around here too. Bow wow can get the bushing and I think Jerry at NWCS can do the machine work.

Wouldn't it be cheaper & easier to buy the FLAPS distributor & take it to someone w/ a distributor machine & have them set the advance curve? Just because the outside of the FLAPS distributor has the wrong part # on it, doesn't mean that the advance is set to match the wrong part #. confused24.gif

I just received mine and it has part number 022 905 205 F which according to a prior post by Bleyseng is:

Well at about $50 for a new (rebuilt) unit as an outright purchase, (no core charge) I would imagine this would be cheaper, or at least a better deal.

Now, As my car is carburated do I need this vacuum advance? If so what do I hook it up to? (vacuum from the carb I assume?) I'm running dual Dellorto 40's. My old distributor did not have the vacuum canister nor the opening in the side for it.

All the rebuilt ones I have seen had good vac adv canisters, but you can test it yourself. I would rather have a rebuilt by A1 than a local guy plus its cheaper. The only P guy I would trust would be Otto's, and their rebuilts go for $135. PP doesn't even list a new unit as available.
Seems like most rebuilt engine guys don't include a good dizzy these days!

For my other VW I know you would have to use a mechanical advance dizzy (like a 009 or 050) and I would assume such a dizzy would work on a carbed T4 engine as well. I'd be interested in a dizzy that could feed off the Dells!
