I saw (then ordered and received) that Wolfsburg West sells a sheet of stickers fir $12.95 for '68-'79 VW Bugs that has several of the stickers found on the 914, the washer bottle pressure, valve adjustment clearance, 91 octane and 12-volt coil stickers:
Here's the link:
Wolfsburg West '68-'79 sticker sheet ZVW30The quality is excellent, they look every bit as good as the originals.
BTW: Here's my front trunk, a work in progress but it did start out black before I repainted the car red:
I have the missing vapor capture tank and charcoal filter, just need to repaint and reinstall some day.

Jon,
I'll explain the tiger stripe thing. I'm certain (& hope) that bliznik will add his comments too.
Original, unmolested headlight motors began to exhibit stripes when they were a couple of years old. Since they curled, they were affectionately labelled "tiger stripes" People like me, who polished the motors to a mirror finish lost the stripes, which are a original". learned my lesson & let them re-oxidize. The stripes came back.
I was one of those people who, though they aborred chrome, would polish everything to a chrome-like finish. In the 80's it was all about bling. Thankfully, I never had anything chrome plated, so it's all back to it's original finish.
Had 2 buds in Cincinnati, who both had the engine tin chrome plated, one a '67 911S & the other a '65 356 Cab. Both cars were amazing to look at, but I always wondered why they did that (both dead now)(both died at the wheel of a Porsche!!!)
The tiger stripes on 914 headlight motors are something you do not want to lose, because they were intended to be there.

I'm going over all of these "old" nailed threads, to see if I can piece some model specific areas for incorporating into year-by=year reference material.
I don't see anything specific for 71 models here, not for ANY sixes!
How about guys, can we flood all the old nailed threads with enough pics for all areas to put all the pieces together for each model and year?
Same applies to all the old nailed threads.
Gimme the goods & I'll dump the old threads for something that's better reference material.

I've been wrestling with the name of the original owner of your car for week. And then it hit me - I met him, in 1975. He worked with a Zambezi Army buddy ('73 Zambezi 914) of mine for Shell. Kept thinking of him as "wierd Al", because of his name.
Spent a week with those guys & wonder why I don't have gout.
Pretty certain it was the same guy, but I lost track of my Zambezi Army buddy until 6 years ago - he's retired in Texas & does "boot scuootin" lessons now. Lost track completely of "wierd Al".
Not worth much, but crossing paths is interesting.

Very nice! As for the leaking screen washer, check the control unit on the steering column (It's a bit of a pig to take apart!) Seems to be a weak spot. It's also a good idea to carry a cheapo tyre inflation compressor that runs from the cigarette lighter to keep the spare topped up.

They're on both sides. Back in my early auto-x days I put a hefty front stabilizer from Automotion on the car that required drilling for support mounts. Stupid, I know, but relaced it later with an adjustable from H&H. The bolts, washers & seals are the remnants of the first one.
Yes, I drilled holes & will eventually have them filled & repainted. I was very serious about autocross in the days (75-81), and loved the capabilities of the 914 for same.
Then I got this for auto-x.......

I am wondering how thick the wood is on the spare tire board?
Also is there a difference between the early cars vs the later ones ?
I noticed my 1970 six has a thicker plywood board and my 1974 has a thinner Masonite board.
Not sure if either is original.

Not sure how thick the wood is, but there are two different shapes. But, I'm not wanting to tear the carpet off mine to find out.
Look at post #23 vs #79 for shape differences. My '75 feels thinner than my '70. Also, it's pretty easy to duplicate for resto purposes no matter what the thickness.

I just checked mine, a 72. Seems to be about 3/8 inch (or metric equivalent) plywood & is painted black on the bottom side before gluing the carpet down.
Would be interested in knowing if/when they switched to Masonite.

Hi All,
I have a 1970 1.7L 914 - and it is missing the ID plate that is near the passenger side headlight housing. The PO showed me that it looked like the front end had been hit in the past and repaired (headlight frame not as perfectly straight as the driver side). I am guessing that the ID plate was damaged or pulled off? The numbers on the windshield and fender well match along with the trunk. Is it possible to obtain a replacement plate? Any advice appreciated.
thanks

Re I.D plates for inner trunk, I think AA sells, or used to sell, them. At least I'm pretty sure they did for the 6.
Hmmm
Re front tire boards. I"m pretty sure the boards changed from plywood to melamine....sometime before 74....and so did the pedal boards...I'm guessing around the same time?

I'd like to hear more on the tire and pedal boards for the later models. Melamine is a plastic-based compound. I's have thought that wood had been continued, though at maybe thinner levels.
Have to wonder if the factory doesn't still have clank ID pltaes (not touching the AA thing), but if they do how many hoops do you have to jump through to get one embossed?

When I have a chance, I"ll go digging...
I'm not sure if melamine is the correct term to be used...I borrowed it from this thread. But the stuff is that crappy pressboard cardboard stuff that breaks off in flakes.
I have the leftover parts from a 74..and from what was titled a 73 but may have been very early (since it had the doors without the sidebars)...I'm pretty sure that both of them had the non plywood crap.

Super nice looking front trunk, but something is missing. Let's see, would that be a fuel tank?
BTW, I noticed a bit of staining from the spare. Most, if not all, of that can removed isopropyl alcohol, but use the 70% stuff. The 91 percent stupp will remove some paint too. Wax after doing it.
Where IS your fuel tanl?

Here's a question for you gurus...Regarding the plastic covers that cover the headlight linkage, I have a set of gray covers and a set of black covers. Which are correct for my 1970 914-6? I see that most of the early cars shown have the black. Does it matter?

Hi guys,
I rarely stray into the originality section, given all the stupid things the PO did to my car - it'll never be original. However, I do appreciate all the information you have post and this section is very entertaining to read!
Question - my car never had the board over the spare tire recess in the front trunk. In fact, I don't even have a spare. I think I can probably cut some plywood to approximate the original piece, but I have no idea how it attaches or stays in position. It appears from the pictures that it rides on top of the curved support pieces at the front of the trunk, but what about at the back, at the trunk firewall? There are no obvious screws or mounts in my car to support the back of that board. Thanks for your help!

Black is correct for your 6. I don't believe gray was used until 1974.
