Back in High school, 1973, there was a guy driving around Glendora that had put a big block chevy, trans, rear end and chassis from a Corvette and did a conversion, the engine was right behind where you'd sit, you just open the side doors to see it. Pretty cool conversion. driving.gif

For all you young folks, we didn't have digital camera's then, I would have taken a picture, but I didn't have my Kodak Instamatic 124 camera with me. biggrin.gif

Back in High school, 1958, we did almost the same. 265" Chev, 2bbl carb, 2 speed powerglide tranny, narrowed Ford rear end. I think the drive shaft was 8" long. Built a nice insulated box to cover engine/tranny.

I would have taken a picture, but they hadn't invented cameras yet blink.gif

In the VW World, if you are thinking about doing something it has already been done 3 times....

That looks like fun.

There was a split here in Santa Maria with a Hemi amidships. Kinda an appropriate term, since the cargo bay becomes the engine room ............. I like the Toronado driveline concept ............................... The Cap'n

If you are looking for a stelth bomber try a 87 westy with a WRX turbo or SVX. Go to SMALLCAR.com for details. Ive been suprised more than once on the Narrows bridge by some of their insanity!!

Dude, I'd go with a 2.4 or so Porsche 6. Keeps it all in the family but way more HP and torque! Best of luck with the project! beer.gif

If your going to mount it mid-body, forget the transaxle and go direct into an automatic and 9inch Ford or something comparable. A couple of vans have been built with a separate subframe to mount the engine, trans, and rear. It pivoted off of a long pin all the way thru the frame. Rear shocks ( they were air at the time) like coilovers would do it.When you want to remove the drivetrain you drop the shocks and pull the pin. It was done up like a rolling engine stand, radiator and all. If you want the Toronado setup you will have to fabricate your own mounts. The factory Olds front mount is pretty simple to attatch to, the rear will take a lil bit more ingenuity. I don't have any good pics of the mounts, but here are a couple of it under construction. Also....forget Sway Away axles. Deal with Moser Engineering out of San Diego. He did my axles almost 20 years ago.....no problems.I had him use 9 inch Ford axle stock splined for VW..............Dad driving.gif
