Full Version: I'm in trouble, drove Fiid's turbo subaru 914 conversion today

If you followed any of Fiids subaru swap thread you'd know that he installed a 2.0 Subaru motor with a single turbo. He estimates that it currently has about 180 hp which seems about right.....With Anthony S. as my passanger, I left the "pub" and hit Hwy 1 with the mission of flogging Fiids car to see what this conversion stuff was all about....6500 rpms just comes up too fast in 1st gear and knowing the strange 2nd gear placement I was nervous as I selected the next gear, luckly I found it and the grin on my face was matching that of Anthony's...yippeeeee, this car is quick.

The sound of the motor was inspiring to either get on the gas or let the compression slow you down, it didn't matter which direction the tach needle swung, the motor still sang to you in a lovely manner.

Even with this car only running it's current 7psi, I think it would give my 3.6 powered 911 a serious workout up thru the gears.

If I did go to the watery side, I would consider a Subaru conversion over a V8 conversion for my choice in powerplants...and yes, I've driven a few V8 conversions with motors ranging from stock straight out of the family station wagon to aluminum headed ZZ4 crate motors...I really liked the balance and the feel of the Subaru conversion.

Good, now can I give you no end of crap for all the Subaru "comments" you've made?

All I can say is that it felt pretty damn fast! And when the turbo spools up, it just seems to want to accelerate harder and harder. Fiid, what is the actual red line on that engine? The engine wasn't even close to being out of steam when Mike was shifting.

It's probably the second fastest 914 I've driven in - the other was olav's scarry fast 240hp 3.2L six. When Fiid dials in a bit more boost and does some dyno tuning he'll be in the scarry fast leagues.

One thing that is cool is that the Suby engine makes good sounds and it sounds like it should be in a 914. To me the V8 has always sounded odd in a 914.

Redline is around 7400 rpm.

You should see what a professional tune does for the engine...

The same, but totally different. The idle is smooth as silk, and it wakes the engine right up.

"Come to the dark-side young Skywalker!" I can't wait for my ride in Tony's car,,,
a little H2O can be a lot of fun! biggrin.gif

Yeah those STI and WRX motors are pretty slick. If ya got to get a water cooled engine this thing is your best bet. Hell even looks like a porsche motor. I would think it's at least 100 lbs lighter then a 6 is. Has more potential in the long run as well($ for $).

I'm gonna stick with my 2.7. It's pretty fast and just a few aerodynamic tweaks from being super scary. driving.gif

7psi... try it @ 20 biggrin.gif

And the factory redline is 7400ish, but the sand car guys run up to 8500 on stock bottom ends (that's where mine is set too, but the boost tapering towards redline to keep the turbo alive keeps me shifting earlier)

Welcome to the dark side Mike.
Mine is at a Subie sandrail specialist in SoCal (Crawford Performance) for a little work. Even before I developed the probs being addressed now, I definitely loved the handling!

I was doing some underground tank tesing today....a guy came in with a wasserboxer VW van......sucker sounded like a V8.....he had a scoobie roo turbo conversion in it.

We have a guy in town that does 3-5 of them a month....
