Full Version: So do fiberglass flare always fit this bad?

I've had these glass flares around that I bought from a local. I mocked them up to my car and lets just say, the fit sucks ass. Is this how bad they typically fit, or are mine worse than average?

I just wanted to do the rivet thing, because I like the look. But, I wonder if these are just too torqued to bother with.

First pic is how they naturally lay up to the rear fender...

Second pic is with my wife putting some weight on it...

Thats about right! You have to cut away at the glass to get them to fit. Plus it looks like it needs to go alittle higher onto your fender. No fear they all need work.

Some do fit better than others but that's about right.

from the pics it doesn't look too bad

Yup higher.
Match the bottom edges of the opening then push the top inward till it fits.
This is where the self tapping sheet metal screws will help pull it in.

These are going to be riveted on so you only get one shot to get it right.

Well shit, OK. I guess its not as bad as I thought. I knew they would require work so I wasn't totally surprised. I just thought they would lay up to the car better.

Originally, I thought rivets would be easier. Now, I think they may take more work to make the exposed edge look clean. With bondo, this would all get "hidden" or obscured.

Most fit so-so in my opinion. I made quarter panel molds off my car for all four corners. They fit great and the whole quarter panel is the same material and moves as a unit under stress.

Thats what concerned me. I can force these to fit up to the fender, but are they going to try to return to their resting shape and if so, will they crack as a result? So, I guess this is normal though.

Oh and about my wifes hands, you notice that big thing on her finger? That was my next Porsche. chairfall.gif

if done properly, bonding the flares to the car shouldn't be a problem
I had huge f/g flares on my VW Scirocco and could lift the car from them with out cracking or other trouble what so ever...

Well I like the rivet look, The edging as I said in the PM was something I stumbled on. I bet if you went to a craft store or something you could find some thing to cover the edges.
But I think dressing the edges with a sander and grinding out the high spots on the matting surface would definately be worth it.
It's just sanding and the paint it prior to final install.

Flares get drilled screwed and fitted before removal and paint.

Yeah, I know I can find the stuff to edge out the flares.

I knew I would have to do some work on those things. But, I hoped they would lay up better "out of the box". I'm not gonna rush into this job right now. I have enough going on with this car as it is. I have the motor out (with a head off), the gas tank out, the interior gutted, Eric has my pedal cluster, new rennshift, new prototipo, builiding a 904 gauge, fixed clutch tube, rebuild all shift linkage, JWest fuse panel. Probably 3 other things I can't think of. These will just have to wait.

Yep divorced and thats just the way some ladies are about our boyhoods.LOL Maybe a good christening on the hood of the 914 might be a good way to unite all the fun components in your life. Christening, nudge nudge, wink wink, know what i mean, know what i mean, christening? biggrin.gif

stock 1800 engine on carbs
I did upgrade the suspension though

was a lot of fun to drive and I did all the work myself
it was my first car project
