Engine swaps, Rotary Mazda 20B triple rotor engine.
I have come across a possible engine for a project 914, a triple rotor twin turbo Mazda Cosmo engine. Also known as the 20B, 280-300HP stock.
I know that it is 7” longer then the 2 rotor engine 12A 0r 13A/B, I just don’t know how long those engine are compared to a 4cyl or 6cyl flat engine.
But I don’t know how much more it weigh’s either, or if it is lighter then a 4cyl 2.5 STI Subaru or 6cyl Porsche 3.2li engine?
There are a few 1/4mile race shops where we keep our 914’s and two of them specialize in Rotary engines, 13A/B 1.3li 700-800Hp - 7sec 1/4mile cars. Not bad,

Questions how difficult is it to adapt a 20B engine to a 915 trans? Also any cooling issue since I hear that the Mazda engines run hot, would this one run hotter with one extra rotor?
Has this been attempted by any 914 club members?
Should I stay with the Subaru conversion?
Any positive feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks smile.gif

I don't know much about them but it seems like a different approach for a 914 engine swap.
The race shop has a few and they would be willing to help.

theyre fast but dont count on fuel economy. My buddies 13B got 14.5MPG, at cruise or at WOT.

Thanks but no worried about fuel Eco yet. I drive a 914-6 with a 3.5li and I don't think it does any better or worse then 10-15mpg, but I could be wrong.

Just thinking it would be different once I sell my 914-6 to start on something different.

one of our Canadian brothers is doing this swap...cannot remember his screen name right now.....

i'd check with Kennedy Engineering to see if they have the adapter plate and flywheel for a 915 and that particular motor.

Saw a vw bus with one....Nasty.

T-4 will fit in a VW, a six will fit on a 901 and a 915 there has to

be a adaptor plate.

My brother in-law's got a cosmo 20b with a single turbo setup in his 93 rx7. It's nice, but I'm just curious why you don't go with the a turbo two-rotor setup which can easily generate 400 hp when setup right.

Make sure you put a big radiator on that thing. ...and shield the header so it doesnt cook everything in sight.

If the turbo two-rotor could make 400HP, imagine what the 20B could do with Turbo smile.gif

You could try asking Eric Strelnicks Street Mod 2 National champion this year. Got a 3 rotor in his FD that is just freaking sick fast. beer.gif

I have heard about a few two rotary 914 engine swaps but never of a triple rotor in a 914.
I also have the option to get it at a very good price from a race team,
it sure would surprise a few people at the track and streets.
Some 914'ers like stock, big fours or six cyl engines, other V-6 or V-8's, I also like the idea of a Honda/Acura 3.5V-6 engine.

I guess to be different. dead horse.gif

I would like to know more about the person from Canada and his 3 rotor project.

Thanks

I've seen the Honda/Acura 3.5 V-6. I have pictures of one that a guy in Nevada is working on, but he asked me not to post them when he sent them, as he is planning on (or was at that time) building a kit. It seemed to fit nicely. smile.gif

I just found this thread. I don't remember getting an e-mail but then again I don't remember what I had for lunch last Monday either. smile.gif I'm going non turbo now - peripheral port N/A all the way to keep things simple. The plumbing for the intercooler and the extra costs involved with turbocharging didn't make sense. Especially since I can make 400+ hp in N/A form and a N/A car is easier to drive at the track.

I started a build thread at:
