Gonna go look at a motor tomorrow and the seller doesn't know what it is. Wanting to know where to look for the case numbers in hope of a 2.0. Anyone????

1.7L:
towards the back of the car, on top of the engine, passenger side, just under the edge of the air-filter, between the rear-most intake runner and the the top tranny-bolt.
number either starts with EA (80HP) or EB (72HP)

1.8L:
towards the back of the car, on top of the engine, passenger side, just under the edge of the air-filter, between the rear-most intake runner and the the top tranny-bolt.
number either starts with EC (76HP) or AN (85HP)

2.0L:
towards the front of the car, on top of the engine, center, just in front of the oil-filler cap.
number either starts with GA (95HP) or GB (100HP)

Also W series were early 1.7.
AN and GB were European models.
AN had carbs
GA & GC 2.0 engines had 3 bolt intake runners at the head.
all 1.7 & 1.8 engines had 4 bolt intake runners
GE (VW transporter) was 2.0 but VW 4 bolt heads & low power

What you want are the GA and GC 3 bolt styles.

look at the head's spark plug locations. 1.7 (& 1.8?) on top 2.0 angled on outsides.

I've got one with no markings in any of those places. I was told it might be a factory replacment. Is the only way to find out what it really it is to tear it apart and measure the heads?

From the Intake runner bolts, it's either a 1.7 or a 1.8.

Is this right?

1.7l --> 90mm
1.8l --> 93mm
2.0l --> 94mm

yepp ...

1.7L - 90mm bore - 66mm stroke
1.8L - 93mm bore - 66mm stroke
2.0L - 94mm bore - 71mm stroke
