SirAndy
just a friendly reminder to update your VIN info.

go here:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=membervins

you can add as many cars as you like. please only add cars you currently own or that you parted out (mark those as "dead") ...

also, try to get as much info as possible, including:

- VIN
- paintcode (badge on drivers side front door jamb)
- build-date (sticker on drivers side rear door jamb)
- chassis number (badge on drivers side front door jamb and stamped into rear trunk floor)
- engine number

and lastly, if you have records of cars that you have come across in junkyards, backyards or even on ebay, please send that info to *me* in a PM.
i'll add those to the database manually so they don't have any owner assigned to them.

I, too, would also like to see the VIN list "fleshed out" with the colors and the cars' disposition where that information is currently missing.

I just updated mine, deleted the Chalon and added the new one. I wanted to add the 72 parts car but it's fate is still undecided and I cannot get to the drivers side to open the door to get the numbers. I will update it once I move the car.

Updated mine Andy... Added the Bumblebee and the color for the Silver car. I will get the rest of it later.

I'm really behind on this... I need to compile past and current cars tonight.

I updated mine too, it's only a shame that each time you want to update for example the colour or the comment, you have to start all over.

Your Own VINs: Click on your VIN number to edit/change/update your personal VIN information ...

when you go to the VIN page, you'll see your own VINs that you added listed on the top.
simply click on the VIN number you'd like to change and a page comes up that allows you to make changes and save them ...

I assume that this would allow a correction to the VIN as well?
If so, we can encourage some changes to the invalid VIN's we find.

yes, any field can be edited ...

btw. if there are any volunteers to help out with keeping the records up to date,
PM me and i'll add you to the list of VIN-Admins.

a VIN Admin can add/edit/delete *any* VIN profile.
add new ones without owners, flag them as "dead", change color, chassis number and any other info for any VIN in the database ...

any takers?

All these thread bumps finally motivated me to get the chassis numbers from both cars. I was surprised that the 1970 chassis number was 132xxx, so much lower than the 1974 was 832xxxx. Do we have production ranges of chassis numbers by year? I looked around the info pages, but might have missed them...
davep
Steve, the body/chassis 3 for the 914/6 is completely different than the 914/4. The 914/6 always has a 13 prefix, followed by a 1 for 1971 and 2 for 1972, then 4 digits for the sequence #. No 0 was used for the 1970 MY for some reason, but the dash which has a similar code number did have the 0 for the 1970 MY. The last 4 digits (the sequence #) should be somewhat close to the last 4 digits of your VIN.

The 914/4 OTOH, has the form xxy9zzz where xx is the week of the year ( 1 or 01 to 52, y is the day of the week (1 to 5) and zzz is the daily sequence # (starts at 501 from beginning in 1969 to about week 40 in 1974, then changes to 001).

Andy (correction required for your first post)

At the time that the chassis number changed from base 9500 to base 9000 the number was no longer stamped into the rear trunk floor, but was instead stamped into a tag that was riveted to the support under the right headlight bucket.

When entering data, please copy the info exactly as you find it on the car. There are known errors in the data plates such as the wrong VIN punched into the safety compliance decal, the wrong Karmann badge attached to the body, the wrong paint code or errors in the body number, even the VIN stamped into the right front fender can be totally different, particularly if it is a replacement body from the factory. If the numbers do not match then either someone has fudged the cars history, the factory goofed, or you may have something that needs some investigation.
ConeDodger
Andy,
I just completed the information for both of my cars. Any chance to put up a chassis number page so we know who owns the next chassis off the line?
smj
Lots of cool info about the body numbers, thanks. I had worried that my 1970 chassis number was spurious because it was so different from my '74 and the VIN plate is missing. But now it looks like my 74's chassis number is the oddball. Taken from the Karmann plate it's 8329612, which doesn't quite compute. I doubt they had a week 83, or if it was week 32 I doubt they had a day 8 of the week. Unless they really liked the Beatles or something...

I'll have to check the rear trunk stamp, since the build date is 8/73...

We may be able to do that at some point. In the meantime, you can contact me for that information.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed to the VIN database.
I now have over 300 body numbers to work with, but sure could use more.

Here's one I looked at today....not sure if I'm going to aquire it or not yet, but I took down the info:

472291621

939544

L96D

05/72

It's got a early back pad/seat, with a tail shifter, but has the dash vents
orthobiz
Check out 4712903048

I just added it because I realized I still have my 1976 registration 31 years later. I assume the car is dead. If not, a future 914world'er can dispute my info. I'd love to know it was still on the road!

Ever so slo-o-o-wly the info and colors are being filled in. If you're a newbie and haven't done so, add your cars' VIN and color to the list.

If you're 914 veteran and have never gotten around to adding your 914 to the list of members' cars, now's a good time as any. Please, or do we have to chair.gif

footnote, I've just started searching junk yards/salvage lots here in Cincinnati for "lost" 914s and and haven't found a single one as yet unsure.gif

Bruce, you are missing one digit in that VIN and another in the body #:
472291621x

x939544
I'm very sure it is 1939544

I do greatly appreciate your assistance.
GWN7
4722916921

It could be a 1 on the Karman tag.....the car was originaly silver and painted blue which is painted over the tag too.........

I'm going to look at it again in a bit and if it goes thru the auction at the right price, I'll buy it and know for sure.
davep
Thanks Bruce, with VIN 4722916921 and date code 05/72 it pretty much has to be 1939544.

I'll let you know for sure when it get's to it's new home smile.gif

Updated my 71, VIN 4712903105, chassis 4029573. Now red, originally yellow. Can't get the date code and color code as car is stuffed in the corner of the garage awaiting a transplant 1.8L and newer clutch.

added a new feature:

- you can now add a url to a hosted image of your car!

piratenanner.gif Andy

PS: easiest way to do that, post a picture of your car in your blog or in a thread, then copy the url of the image into the "Picture Link" box on the page where you edit your VIN info ...

Thread is back.

Thanks to all who've updated and will soon do so. Those of us who appreciate this input and value it to record both the survivors and the "deceased' 914 #s "thank you." Don't foget to include the color code as well.

If you've just joined our 914 family, welcome, and go to the top of the Forum page and click on the "914 Info" to add your 914s' VIN and color code. type.gif

Just another friendly reminder. The information is useful for many purposes.
Please check the color code on the Karmann badge for accuracy. If you find any discrepancies, be sure to alert me. The body # on the Karmann badge is also very important. Right now we are trying to determine when the black tag with the body number first appeared in the front trunk, and also when the body number changed from xxy95zz to xxy90zz. to help out see this thread:

time for yet another icon_bump.gif
Knowing how many of these cars have survived is very useful.
lotus_65
hey i have 2 different vin numbers, one up front and one on the widow/door jam. does that mean i have a salvaged car?

anyway, i'm updating the rest of my stuff now.
davep
Well I'm guessing it was two separate cars at one time.
Look carefully to see where it was stitched together. What is the VIN on the ownership? When you say the number up front, is that the number stamped into the right fender, or the number on the VW badge on the headlight bucket? What VIN's do you find?
Get the data from the Karmann badge and compare the body number on the badge to the number in the trunk floor. Compare the paint code to the color of the car. It could be just the fender was replaced.
