Can a 2.0 TB seal be made to fit an earlier motor, with trimming?

Anyone have dimensional info on both?

Can one be made for a 1.7 or 1.8?

My search came up with lots of amiguous info.

Here we go again. There's a current thread involving this very thing, as well as AA, and I recall the subject coming up a number of times in the past. THIS ANSWER IS NOT AMBIGUOUS. No, the 2 litre gasket cannot be made to work on a 1.7/1.8 plenum and throttle body, unless you're adept at turning a flat paper gasket into a ribbed rubber cone. In fact, the 1.7 gasket is different from the 1.8, but a clever person might be able to make a 1.8 gasket work on a 1.7 by cutting it down and gluing it back together.

Yes and Auto Atlanta "SUCKS" (but we still have the 1.7 and 1.8 gaskets in stock, and cut the cardboard 2.0 variety.) And yes I am first and foremost the chief 914 enthusiast!

Look, I saw Apollo 13 and I bet you can make any gasket fit anything. Especially if your reentry into Earth is at stake.

But to amplify what Cap'n said (in a somewhat frustrated tone), I think the answers to some of the repeated questions could be placed in the 914 Info section. Or nailed somewhere for everyone.

Like, the spacing on the PORSCHE letters on the engine grille. OR
Which Optima battery to order with the appropriate clamp. OR
the unambiguous answer to Pat's question (that's currently debated in another thread). OR
torque specs including wheel bolts, etc.

I have learned from Gint's posts how to better use the search function. How about a nailed post with more detail about the search function, like when to use the "+" symbol and when to use the "*" Maybe the answer to Pat's question would have jumped out at him and stopped him from posting (hmmmmm, I doubt it but maybe).

I don't have the information to write up most of these answers as I'm still a 914 novice (even though I now own my fourth car!). But, if you checked out a site such as fmtunerinfo.com, you'll see a splash page with all sorts of common FAQ info.

Maybe even a list of common repair places (I know Brad Mayeur spends more time fixing our cars than he does posting!). How about a nailed wheel post: there are at least four good places to get your wheels redone, some are members here! Throw in a caveat that it's not the "only place to get work done, and we don't guarantee the work, yaddayaddayadda" but I think it would be useful. And may cut down on the repeated questions.

Hey, remember this is the best site on the web! I PM'ed the Cap'n a while back and he was willing to check out a car for me and he doesn't even KNOW me!

Gee Biz, I'm overwhelmed!

When I did my search on "my topic" I found16 pages of nebulous inferrences to the search topic. I, like many others, have limited tome available to get my questions answered by the pros. After only 2 pages of searching & reading I kept getting further from MY question. Though I was fairly certain of the answer, I just wanted confirmation. Apparently, a 2.0 TB seal is worthless to a 1.7 guy.

Look, I did my search. I did not come up with any answers, just people P&M'ing that I had asked a question that had been asked before.

I've been here a short time (year & a half), but think about the newbies who just got here - they don't know who's asked what! Please have some consideration for those who spend most of the time in other forums!

Paul, this is NOT directed at you - you just provided the platform.

IF you have the 1.7 and 1.8 gaskets "in stock", there is no earthly reason for the other thread to have have gotten started. You can't have it both ways, George. You either have them or you don't. If the guy in the other thread was told you had them, and then discouraged from buying one, why was he told you don't have them when he called back and tried to order one, and we're now being told you do have them? Make up your mind, and (if you indeed have them) make the original poster of the other thread happy by sending him one! If under 20 bucks will break you, you're living in a delusion. Think about it.

I'm sorry, but this whole scenario has been repeated so many times here, on the club, on NARP, and on Rennlist (as well as on Porschelist before that) that most of us are pretty damn tired of it. I'm here for fun, and am pretty enthusiastic about helping people here, on the Club, on Rennlist, and on the NARP site. I lack a certain measure of patience for people who don't think things out, I'm a bit brusque with those who, for whatever reason, don't want to hear the truth, and I am proud of the overall accuracy of my advice. If I'm in error on a technical matter, I immediately defer to more accurate knowledge. And I RARELY, IF EVER, try to sell my products openly on any of the lists. An occasional PM, but it's been years since I made even a small mass offer.

Simple enough?

I can't think where you would be able to find the dimensions, maybe someone who has one could measure & post the info.

Search around, you can find a vendor that has the gasket in question. I also believe there was a member making them...

Yep, that was Tod914 - make them for a 2.0.

Hence my question.

wow. Since the 2.0 throttle body is mounted on the top of its own unique plentium, and has a flat base, the gasket is different than both the 1.8 and 1.7 variety that wear a side mounted throttle body with an oval attachment. The 2.0 gasket was actually made from thicker cardboard (for lack of a better word for it) material and the throttle body attached with two 8mm bolts. The 1.7, 1.8 used a cone shaped round rubber gasket that more acted like a large o ring cinching the throttle body to the plentium with two tension bolts. The 1.7 and 1.8 gaskets were so similar that either can be interchanged with great success. The 2.0 cardboard gasket is its own unique "animal" and as the factory has discontinued the part, must be made from gasket material.

I was wondering the same thing and after i read this post and Pat's simple question and how he got snapped at i wasnt gonna ask what made them different

So, get over it! Stop the infighting! We need both of you, regardless of your differences. OK?

This non-club needs professional information from all sources. And, the last thing it needs is bickering. Hell, you don't hear me bickering with the Subie or Chevy guys. We all have our thing, and are entitled to it. May not agree with it, but you don't have to dump on the other guy.
