no they work best. Years ago we tried some different ones with the various big bore kits all to no avail.

I am going to BUT I lhave a megasquirt.

It is possible to use different injectors with the stock system BUT it will take a little work. Mst modern inj's. have an O ring top, not hose barb so a fuel rail will be needed.

Also, most modern inj's. run at 43psi BUT there are plent of inj's out there that will flow the same amount of fuel as stock @ the 29 psi.

I have looked into this extensivly, bottom line is YES it can be done with a little work and some research

I'm using Niehoff. Got them at PartsAmerica.com . They're the ones for 1974 Mercedes SE. Straight hoses, so I replaced them with the elbow hoses. $49 each brand new. Different nozzle design. Only one year and 2000 miles at this point, so it's early, but so far no problems. NAPA may sell Niehoff under either Niehoff or NAPA brand name.
