Update on my camshaft replacement. It turned into a lot more, clean, clean & more cleaning. headbang.gif

I worked on the 914 this weekend & got a lot done. The only thing left to do is put in the new Chris Foley S.S. gas lines before the engine goes in. I've been looking for a "how to post" & wondering if their is a post? Do you have to open up the tunnel inside the car taking out the gear shift assembly?? Just wondering to save time??

FYI: I'll post a few pictures.

I purchased a new Alternator Harness from Jeff Bowsley and it's a beautiful piece of workmanship. I used a little Armorall on the rubber parts and on the (3) pole plug housings which are not supplied with the harness. The Armorall helps slip the pieces through the rubber & glides easy into the (3) plug housing. The old harness is For Sale if anyone wants it for $25.00 shipped anywhere U.S.A.

The other pictures are of my A.C. pulley with dimensions, etc. I have all the A.C. stuff & will put it in one of these days.

Thomas, that is great looking and I agree, your take offs are cleaner than the stuff that I put together. I have 2 questions for you.

what did you use to get your engine case so clean? What chemicals and what type of of bruch??

OK Three questions. where did you get your "muffler" behind the heat exchangers? That is hot and I want one. beerchug.gif

Answer: My machine shop (Primo Petrucci) sent the case out to a professional shop that hot tanked it & it was not really necessary. It was already clean from my former 10-year restoration when I had the case cleaned & etched to look like it just came out of the factory mold.

OK Three questions. where did you get your "muffler" behind the heat exchangers? That is hot and I want one. beerchug.gif

The exhaust is a Bursch Exhaust. I think it was # BX-1424 Street/Combo that has a flange to break it down into two pcs. I don't think they have this one available anymore. They now call it # BX1423 without the flange.
Notice the different color of the muffler?? It was jet hot coated with a ceramic coating with a non-polished finish. They cannot polish mufflers due to the polishing process. Here's a photo how the Bursch looks on the car from a 2006 photo. w00t.gif

Thanks hwgunner & So.Cal-914 for the kind words.

Hi Guys,

I've been busy with other stuff & want to pass on some interesting information. I hope to have my engine installed and fired up in a few weeks. I am assembling everything with the engine out so when it goes in it's add gas & fire her up.

It's been slow working out little CW details. I have to tell you it's expensive to be a CW (Concourse Weenie). I just picked up a small rubber sleeve for my new S.S. gas lines where it goes in the engine compartment. To prove my point here's a photo of the damage with a PC discount, Ouch @ $7.76 bs.gif

I want to compliment Chris Foley's S.S. gas lines, they are a work of art & went in with no issues. I would have liked them to be about 1" longer inside the engine compartment to clear a stock clamping bracket, but no problem. Also got good service from AA & Tod Worden on a few misc. small parts. Thanks Guys. I am glad I changed out the gas lines, because I think there was a very small leak where the metal & clear plastic lines are sweated together. I was getting a fuel smell & could never find the source. See photo's.

One more thing. I recently posted about re-sizing my Megnacore spark plug wires. I stopped at Magacore in nearby Farmington Hills, MI. Steve is cutting them down for me. I didn't like the length & he is happy to do it for me. He cautioned everyone don't do it yourself, because bad things will happen if you do.
I cut down #1 & #2 by 10" on one & 6" on the other. They are now both 27" long, #3 & #4 are 23" long & fit fine. Look at the photo & you will see why (CW anal issue).

There you go again, Mr. Bliznik, raising the damn bar even higher. The reason you have to do your own "wrenching" is because other folks' tools will get your parts and car oily, greasy and dirty. biggrin.gif
Nice work, and again, remind me not to ever enter a concours where you are showing your 914. Nice work (with pretty pictures). clap56.gif

Thanks for the kudo's Paul, Chappy & Lou.

It's amazing how much you forget where the wires go, etc. Good thing I have a parts car stashed away at my buddies place near Metro Airport. I had to go there this week to check a number of motor wire routings. It's a real rust bucket, but has a 2.0 liter motor, FUCHS wheels. chrome bumpers, good glass, etc.(photo's) The car is in the airport landing route and anyone looking out the airplane window can see it sitting in the weeds. Eveyone needs a parts car. w00t.gif

I finished up everything on my motor and it's ready to go into the car. I have a neighbor coming over to give me a hand this week.

Tom
BTW: Nothing is FS on the parts car.
Hope Andy see's this & puts it in the dead file, (Vin # 4732920875).

Hi Guys,

Here's an update on my slow moving project. I don't know when I'll get the motor started, because so many things get in the way, business, grandkids & going to Florida for two weeks vacation next week. The 914 takes a lower priority & it will get done when I get to it. headbang.gif

Motor is installed & I have to hook everything up. I am having some fun with the bling, bling, exhaust system. w00t.gif Which one do you like!!! stirthepot.gif

Dave,

BURSCH Exhaust model #BX-1424 with High Heat Ceramic Coating (like name brand Jet-Hot). I understand the # BX-1424 I have is not available anymore. It's now # BX-1423 without the flange between the muffler & header attachment. The ceramic coating will cost you about $300 to $400 bucks extra by a coater, the bling factor.rolleyes.gif

Hi Guys,

Well I finally had time to fire up the new engine and break in the cam. This weekend I washed it and adjusted a few things to drive it around the block (without insurance, etc.) and it's now put away for the winter.

I needs some miles put on it and a final tuneup for cruising. I have an alternator light that stays on so I have to find out why?? Along with a few other minor gliches. All in all I am happy with everyting.

A memo to Jake & Ham. smilie_pokal.gif I think I like the Jake Raby #9550 cam and Ham's/Jakes new cylinder heads. Idle is good and power feels good. More kudo's after I get a few miles on it next spring 2010. Thanks Jake & Ham.

I'll post a few photo's of the finished product. stirthepot.gif

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the compliments. I got a little annoyed with the extended time on jack stands & was thinking "Boxster". It went away after the drive around the neighborhood. I got a little annal with a few things, for example the ceramic Harley Davison high temp coated piston barrels. w00t.gif It was a fun project.
