Looking at the backside it would be 9 oclock

So that will be the side with the turn signal lever correct?

Lets see if this clears things up a little. With the wheel mounted on the column the cancelation tab will be located on the backside at the 3 oclock position or close to the wiper lever.
Hope this helps.

look at the turn signals ring.
There is a spring that comes out at about 1 and 5 oclock.
the canceling tab hits that when you turn the wheel.

make sure the spring is there.
make sure the white little tabs do in fact attach to the spring still..
they tend to break off after 30 years.

You can set the blinker and flick the spring with a screw driver to make sure it works.
Lube it up.
you can also use the four screws to adjust how sensitive it is to turn on and off...
It seems to bind if the screws are to tight..and clicks off really fast if they are loose.
