Are these retaining wires still available and if so where? Are they actually needed? There aren't any in my heads...

Try local bug shops or post a wtb ad.

I broke one once and was able to find a replacement fairly easily.

Yes it needs them. Sense they come (2)in every engine (except yours )

Yah, makes sense they'd be required...just can't understand why I haven't developed a huge leak since they're missing.

They are available new from Porsche. I just bought 2 sets last year for my engine and the next one I am building... I do not recall price but they weren't too expensive. They did have to come from Germany though...

I think Jake has those, I'm pretty sure I bought some from him.
