I purchased my 914 off ebay and was told by the seller that the engine was "probably" a Van engine. Likely a 1.7L. Well for the past month I've been trying to track down the engine code when finally today I did get it.

I looked up and it's listed as a 2000cc engine that comes with the 75/76 914s. Now I've got a '76 porsche that was built in late '75. I was under the impression that all '76 models came with a fuel injected engine. I also thought they all came with the center console but mine came with neither.

Can anyone clear this up?

Yes. All (USA) 1.7L and 2.0L came with D-Jet, all 1.8L came with L-Jet.

No 914 on this side of the atlantic was delivered with carbs, if you have carbs, someone other than the factory put them on there.

As for your engine, GC003400, both '75 and '76 were the same internally:

These cars are old enough now that what's what can be a bit muddy... I just bought an engine that was a combination of 1.8L bus case, 2.0L bus pistons/cylinders, 2.0L 914 heads and a 2.0L crank from one or the other. The guy that I got it from only knew what the heads were... I had to open it to verify the pistons and crank.

You've got a 2.0 case, which is a good sign that the engine is a 2.0, but check your heads to see if they have three or four studs on the intake manifold. Three is a 2.0L 914 head, four is "something else".

Thanks for the info. So regardless, I've got a 914 engine, unclear whether it's the original, but definitely converted from D-Jet. Though it could have all manner of parts in it.

Okay, one more question. How about the transmission. How would I be able to tell if it's a sportmatic or not? In the engine bay there's a "925" in white letters. I did a search for that and it came up with it being sportmatic, but I'm thinking the 925 listed there is something else.

As for the center console.

Toward the end of the 914 run, most items were made to be options, so no, not all 75/76 2.0l came with a center console.

Curse of being a computer guy that could fix anything and trying to get at least half as good with cars. It's a learning curve.
