ok, basically this: *IF* Jake were to Raffle off one of his engines... who here would be willing to fork up $50/ticket for a CHANCE to win it? how many Tix would you consider buying?

also, is there someone here who could explain to us how we could do this legally?

there are some doubts that we could sell 150+ tix... enough to pay Jake for his time/engine...

I'd buy a ticket if it was also supporting a good cause.

What about ALS charities? I never actually caught what the ailment is that Hunter has, but I bet there is a charity that sponsors support and research for that. (Qarl??)

Maybe you should talk to the guys planning the West Coast 914 event and make the drawing for the raffle occur at the event...just an idea.

One ticket definately.

Heck ... it's looking more and more like "The BS Fudge Factor" will sabotage this raffle attempt on one of Jake's masterpieces; too many smiley faces and not enough head-scratchers. I'm an optomist, but sometimes these goodwill hunts have a tendancy to end in pure grief. I was the one who suggested 125-150 tickets @ $50 a piece, if just to weed out the occasional spectator. Add more tickets to lower the ticket prices means increasing liability issues, i.e. BSFF.

Remember, the more individuals/entities that become involved with handling/sponsoring this raffle/event, the more individuals/entities that will have to be EXEMPT from participation. This is done for reasons of fairness, or to dispel even the remote possibility of impropriety. If you wanna become one of those ticket holders, than you better step back and let this play out by itself.

We live in a litigious society (i.e. sue-happy); all it takes is one sore loser to find a reason to put Jake and the sponsor(s) into a hellhole.

For most lotteries you need a charity to donate the proceeds to so you can get a licence to sell tickets. My favorite is:

They raise funds to buy and maintain a burn ward in local hospitals. Speciality equipment, ect.

Unlike other charities all the money raised is used for the purpose it is intended. No one takes administrative fees or 20-30% off the top for fund raising. A very worthwhile charity. There are several burn funds all over North America.

I agree jake... we need a law specialist if this thing were to come to pass... I was just curious because I think it could be a great way to help out a charity or 2 and be really neat for someone to get a "jake special" ... it would be a tricky situation at best, though :|

The laws of the state you reside in and where you are selling the tickets apply. If I remember.....most of the auctions like this have been conducted by non-profits....then they split 50/50 with the charity. AFTER deductions for expenses, if any.

California is out. I researched it tonight. If for no other reason, because you can't do any ticket sales over the internet for a legal raffle. Now another option might be to have people buy membership into a "club" and have the club give away an engine to its members. Might be a loophole.

Donate the engine to the 914Club Jake...We'll raffle it off at the 914 West Coast Classic with lots of RAT publicity....Brad could install it if the winner was local.

There's at least one raffle like this in Panorama each month so we should be able to contact an organization that's running one and see how they do it. Donating to 914Club is probably out because it's not really a club and so it doesn't have federal 501c3 designation as a non-profit organization.

And Roadglue wasn't a club either but we sure had a lot of fun...for being a non-entity.

Is there a rule somewhere that says that only non-profits can accept donations? Anyone can give and receive 'gifts' all day long to whomever they want...

An engine or anything else is given away by one party to another party...advertising and publicity is given away in return...Bartering is illegal I suppose, but where is the solid line of what is right and wrong? We of course would only want to do whats right...

Thats the whole thing.. It would have to be legal in every state that people purchased tickets from.. Getting all the laws would be near impossible.

I wonder if I coyuld get someone overseas to conduct it?? The customer could just pay the shipping(thats not much)

I guess its an idea.... just sell it to someone overseas and let them raffle it off.

Do you think you could find some Nigerians to handle the raffle? The winner could then wire them a certified check (that they couldn't deposit) for more than the amount needed and they could cash the check and wire back the excess money and ship the motor, too! Naw...no one would ever fall for that...!

I am in Iraq. I am willing to conduct the raffle "administration" from here.

Someone state-side would need to be willing to assist me in collecting money. I don't trust the military postal system with that many checks/MOs.

The problem with an individual running it is liability - it wants really to be administrated by a charity.

Here's an idea. We should nominate a charity and approach them and ask if they will run it. Some charities will have experience running this sort of thing. They'lll probably have some experience with it.

I'd go for 2 tickets if it were a charity event.
