I purchaced a 1972 porsche 914/4 a few weeks back and am having a bit of trouble getting the numbers broke down. the VIN is 4722919064. it was manufactured on 06/72. the karman plate in the drivers door reads NR. 2439512. L9H. the engine was out of the car and it has a number stamped onto the block AW009121. there was a set of webers with it and I found the following on them 40 IDF 19. ? the car seems very original with very minamal rust. it cam from michigan. the color is a gold color under the red paint. I bought a 1970 914/4 a few months before I ran into this one and being the other (1970) is body is completely rusted I am going to use it for parts. I have purchaced a number of books on the 914 and some kind of point me in a direction but not very through. I am under the impresion that this is a 1800 VW bus engine. and maybe a off color. I am prepairing to rebuild the engine and I want to be able to get the correct parts. will these webers work? any help would be very greatly appeciated. this is my first porsche/VW 914. I have a 1972 El camino restored by myself so I do know cars. but these little guys are a mystery right now. thanks for reading. before I leave one more thing that I thought was interesting is the front of this 914 has no grills for the driving lights and is rounded unlike the flat fronts of all the 914's I have seen below the rubber bumper its plain and rounded (2 piece).

Welcome! welcome.png

According to this site: http://w2.wolfsburgii.com/t2e.htm your engine is a 1.8 73-74, however, due to the age of the engine, it could be built into just about any configuration by a previous owner (PO). I don't believe there was a factory gold color offered. Could you post a pix of the bumper?
rick 918-S
welcome.png Yes it's a 72. Someone here has the paint codes and chip colors listed someplace. I'm sure someone will either post a link for you or you could use the search function and maybe find them.

I'm not the guy for the engine code info either. But wanted to welcome you. assimilate.gif

Be sure to record the vin numbers here as well. We keep track of the cars. Specially the ones that get sacrificed for parts.

Post some pics of your new passion. thisthreadisworthlesswithoutpics.gif

Engine number not sure, unless it is AN instead of AW, which would be a 1975 1.8L

Your body color is missing a number, probably an L97H which was gold metallic.

Oh... and :welcome: biggrin.gif

2) AW engine code is a 73-1975 1.8 from a bus. are you getting the number from by the oil filler? just to be sure.
http://www.type2.com/bartnik/enginecodes.htm

3) your VIN is a "late" 72...
The factory changed the strut housing, ball joint, caliper and rotor at VIN 4722919032, so when you go to buy parts, buy a 73 part, not a 72... mine is the same way, and every "70-72" part I've ever bought had to go back for the 73-74 version

4) dual weber 40idfs are a common carb replacement for the factory FI.

Cool, another Gold one, to bad it was color changed. Seems like a high number of gold, ravenna green, and orange cars were color changed.

Andy,

Here's a pic of my car's color tag. I see it is called Delphi Green Metallic. As you can see what it is called on my car. BTW, quickly changed the color to Ocean Blue Metallic (3AY).

below the front bumper is 2 metal panals with no openings. the lower panal has 2 small dimples and thats it. I have not seen these on any other 914 I have looked at. I take it when I get parts for this car I can refere to it as a 73, 1.8 liter VW bus engine? are these considered the opossed cylinder flat motor type 4. are th 40 idf's worth installing and is there rebuild kits for them.

the carb rebuild kits are readily available, I recommend aircooled.net. what is the car running on now? if it's running on the L-Jet, then leave it... if it's not running, and carbs will make it run... well, connect the dots biggrin.gif

thank-you for the info. when I purchased the car the engine and trans were in box's. needless to say I was and am worried. I hope its all there. there was one box with a set of weber carbs (40 IDF's). the guy had purchaced a new set of jugs and pistons but the bill of sale says they are, VW 96mm piston and cylinder BUS, 914 type IV 2 liter stroke. he paid like 301.90 for these and I don't know if they will fit the engine. it appears my engine is a 1973 VW 1.8 liter. type 2. as you can see I am a little worried going into this engine.
tat2dphreak
well, you will need to replace the crank and rods to use 2.0L pistons, assuming the 1.8 is still a 1.8, and wasn't rebuilt into something else.

if they are 2.0L pistons the pin height is for a 72mm(2.0) crank, with 2.0 length rods, the 1.8 and 1.7 used a 66mm crank and different rods with different pins.

if you are going to build the engine, I suggest getting Jake Raby's build video and studying it like your new favorite porno.
you can get it at type4store.com

if my engine was in a box of pieces I'd be worried too... biggrin.gif but don't worry, with jake's video, and us here... we'll help

I think you are talking about the stock Valance being rounded, where others are flat...

others have gone to aftermarket air dam, or LE-style Valance

I think your 914 looks awesome, btw!

thanks. the front valance was on the car when I purchaced it. it is unusal as I have never seen one. I don't know if I will keep it on as I like the style on my 70 parts car. I may put the rear valance from my 70 on as well. it looks pretty cool. but there is a factory hole on the drivers side and it appears that there is some sort of electrical hook in? me and my brother can't figure that one out. maybe a battery connection. I don't know. again thanks for you valuble knowledge with my car. I am also thinking of putting the 1.7 from my 70 in it to get it on the road while i rebuild the 1.8 over the winter. again thanks for all your help.

I really appreciate all your help and I would like to ask another question. on my center console on the floor there is a VDO boost, press. gauge. I have not seen this in any other 914 so far. what was the reason for the gauge. It apears stock. thanks.
tat2dphreak
dunno. stock console had oil temp, voltage and a clock.

I pulled out the voltage and clock on mine, for oil pressure and CHT,

maybe that is an oil pressure gauge? or if the person was going to turbo the car, they may have indeed wired a boost gauge.

Nah, leave the boost gauge and wire it so that upon full throttle, the gauge reads 2bar boost.

It will impress the ladies... lol-2.gif

I used this oil temp gauge
this oil pressure gauge
be sure and use the dual sender, so you will have the stock light + the gauge

I also used the CHT from VDO, but at this point I can't recommend it since I can't get the F'n thing to work right.

edit: almost forgot, you will need the little adapter rings, these are slightly smaller than stock. the adapter rings can be had from egauges.com cheaply or you can make your own
Grelber
Why not just add extra gauges? There's plenty of room:
