The point of this thread is to hear all voices.
Most of you have your favorite marques. I used to, until I experimented. So, what do you/your loving other drive to work? I appreciate those who drive 914's every day, but most of can't, for various reasons. What I'd be curious to know, besides what you drive daily, is - did you but it or lease it? Would you buy one? (since leasing seems to be becoming a lost item). Why do you drive what you drive? Would you buy one again? Do you like it? Hate it? Just curious. Pat |

For 17 years I made my living as a German car mechanic (3 VW/Porsche/Audi dealerships and a VW/Porsche/Audi/BMW independent shop). I have a strong preference for German cars.
That said, I am currently I am alternating between a 91 Honda Accord (2.2L w/ automatic) and a 93 Toyota 4x4 PU (3.0L V6 w/ 5 speed). The Honda had been my sons car at college but he needed to stop driving and I have it now. I have a list of work it needs but it is cheap to commute in. The Toyota I got because I wanted/needed a truck that I could haul with. My wife drives a 91 Ford Explorer 4.0L w/ automatic. We got it to be able to tow and still haul the kids and friends around. It was suppose to be replaced by the Toyota PU since the "the kids" are in college or senior in high school. My daughter some how has made our 96 Audi A6 quattro (2.8L V6 w/ automatic) her car to drive to and from school. Neither my wife or daughter want to drive a stick shift and my wife likes the Explorer and my daughter does not. I bought the A6 to put my wife in a comfortable & safe car that would also be a nice car for road trips with the family. I also have a 93 Audi S4 (2.2L 5cyl. turbo with 5speed) sitting storage waiting for some time to fix a few problems. It needs at least 1 ignition coil (just don't know which of the 5 is bad) and suspension bushings and brake work. My last beast is actually the vehicle I drove to work today, 1976 Chevy G30 van based 21ft RV. I traded a rusty 72 914 1.8L for it 3 years ago and everything on it works except the generator. I have had to fix a blown head gasket and replace the radiator. I actually put on some used heads that I had a machine shop clean & check, resurface and replace valve stem seals. I also swapped in a mild cam. Finished this just last week and used it camping over the weekend. It is on it's way back to the storage yard this evening after work. Of course I have 3 914's (70 1.7L, 72 1.7L, 73 2.0L) non of them run and only 1 is completely assembled. Can't seem to fit much time in for them. There is a long list of other cars I have owned and most were Audi's and VW's with a few other mixed in here and there. I have never bought a new car, only bought 2 cars from dealerships and only took out car loans twice (if you ignore the $300 I borrowed from my mom for my first car) Jim |
