Well today was interesting.
The begining: I got a 2.7 from a '74 targa for free from a friend. Yup, a free engine. I looked at this engine that had loose head nuts and subsequent exhaust leaks and figured that it would need some work. It couldn't cost that much, right? I mean, the engine was free. So the heads needed t be worked, the barrels needed to be re worked, and I figured that I would just rebuild it my self. During the school semester. In my free time. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif) Ok, so it didn't work out that way. I was fortunate, however, to live near a wonderful shop that is very inexpensive. The owner himself finished assembly of my engine (I dropped off a box of parts and an assembled long block with two pulled studs (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) ). He is only gonna charge me for the time it took him. He did it on his free time and he will likely cut me a large break on the cost. I dropped off the engine when they were moving shops and I told him not to rush as I was in no hurry. Well today I stopped by and was expecting him to have been too busy. Nope, he pulled the cover off of it and was like, "walla." Now I am excited, and sad. the bill will be calculated by Wed (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) I never thought that I would build a real Porsche /6 because of the cost. this is so overwhelming. I'm gonna need a bunch of encourgement on this one. I hear a sucking sound in my wallet. Anyone need interior pieces restored? Gotta fund the project somehow. |

I have met the guy that Literaly wrote the book for honing the Alusil cylinders.
In fact his name is on the cover of the book for all machining processes that Sunnen Corp engineered for all off their automotive machining equipment. And one of the lead teks that Porsche hired from Sunnen to find out how to resurface Porsche cylinders. He is that guy... He is still honing porsche cylinders in his shop. He is a world class machinist and has the pedigree and the tools to back it up. He also ports heads besides doing most engine machining... He handles balancing, all head and block work, surface testing, wet break in setup, rod machining and alignment and on and on....... His shop is in Costa Mesa. He is somewhat of a recluse to the industry now days. I will call him up tomorrow and see if he wants his phone number listed on this forum. If you guys are interested.. i will TRY to get him to come on board and lend some of his smarts to this board. His expertise is NOT in type 4. Even though he is very familiar with them. His shop has Lambo and ferrari 12 bangers in it as well as Suby motors and chevys... Dam interesting guy John is... What do you guys think???? Do I go for it???? Twystd1 |
