Hi, working away on a refresh of some items on my Bumblebee. One of the items I want to address is the cheap carpet kit it has that has not been installed very well to boot.

I am going to place an order for a kit. The question is which color. I want to go with the German Loop. There is a black, early charcoal and late charcoal.

Which color is the most appropriate for a Bumblebee with a black interior.

communication from deep down the rabbit hole.
(i hope my carbon fibre sub doesn't implode at maximum depth. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) )

so here is a 74 412. its an L jet. its up on the samba. a guy hauled it out of a garage somewhere --its very original and loved well (lovingly worn).
don't have a production date, but they were still making them until end of model year 74.
06/74 is the end of the line. overlaps with introduction of scirocco by 3 months.
and 914s continue to churn down the aisle at karmann while thats going down.
but 412s are not built at karmann. either at wolfsburg or at a new plant in germany.

and......there is that carpet that pops up in 914s as mr. b notes around week 9 1974.
the old mottled look (salt and pepper to you good old north americans).

------
and here is a 71 411 - with a brown interior.
from a very original car that was sold on BAT about 6 months back.

my early version 74 brown carpet for comparison.
@StarBear 's got the same stuff.

maybe they changed the tone slightly to go with fashion and taste from 71 to 74. but i bet a 71 914 with loop pile is exactly like this 71 411?
and the stuff has all faded after half a century (severely when it comes to the brown).

so - looks like top of the line VWs all copped the same stuff.
412s being top of the line - as were 914s?
its a VW wide thing whatever it is and nothing to do with porsche over there in stuttgart
(911s got that velour stuff that was similar to what some mercs had).

i reckon this mottled (salt and pepper) stuff is BMW stock.
though i can't find BWMs that have the earlier grade of "lux" carpet that VW was running.

but anyway. the last of the 412s got it. the last of the 914s got it. from around the time mr. b indicates all the way to the end in 76. and the sciroccos in top spec form were getting it too. and maybe golfs and passats in top spec versions as well?
anyway i think it is VW wide. and it hits the cars all around the same time.

all i can say is you guys with the later carpet are probably lucky.
BMW restorers would be the source.

the stuff that is in the earlier top line VWs is way harder to find, if findable at all.
