My dad bought a new beetle in 66. When I passed my driving test in 77 it became my first car.
When it was time for a sports car, being in England it had to be a MG. It was fun when it worked, but that wasn't very often! I wanted the benefits of the beetle (good engineering) with the fun of a sports car. You can see where this is leading... Many years later ('91) I was working over in the states, miles from home, looking for some excitement. So I bought a Californian '76 914 and shipped it back to England in a container. I've only driven it about 5000 miles since then. It's been sitting in my garage due to wife, kids etc. but I have put a 2 litre six cylinder engine in. Oh, the MG caught fire a long time ago and I reluctantly sold my beetle when I bought the 914. |
