914 air conditioner Options

I have an air conditioning unit for the 914, another part of my 20 year old clutter pile. I'm reluctant to chop the bottom out of the trunk for the huge condensor coil. It would need a new compressor and hopefully a smaller condensor coil could be made to work. How much work to install? Is it worth the effort?

I am building a custom air conditioning system. I will be mounting the condenser under the engine lid.

Also Warren is planing a trip to California and the southern US and then shipping his 914 for a European tour.

The interior unit is about all I would re-use, I would use a new modern compressor, dryer and evaporator, plus all new lines. If you do a search a few members have done AC installs.
BTW I have a stock 914 AC pulley you can have.

There's also electric AC but you would have to upgrade/mod a much bigger alternator.

California is planned for 2023. Europe may be next summer or 2024 depending on Covid and my ability to pay off the engine rebuild!

As mentioned in the other thread, I'm concerned about hacking up the car. Mark could help ensure a tidy and respectable installation. It's not a powerhouse to begin with. How much engine power does it steal? My other concerns are in terms of effectiveness, taking up leg room, and possibly even affecting value of the car.

Agreed but there have been times I've had too much sun and put the roof back in place. Also have to consider passenger comfort, ie my poor tolerance for whining and complaining.

This is a welcome discussion as I want to add AC to my car.
I'm hoping some of the expertise shown here can offer an opinion on
my idea.
I want to take advantage of the vacant area in front of the right rear wheel.
Similar to the mounting of the oil tank on a 914 6 I want to place
the condenser and a pulling fan behind the passenger door.
Yes, I'm willing to open the quarter up to allow flow-thru.
The condenser might be as large as 12" x 16" x 1.5 or 2"
Appearance aside, can this be adequate cross section ?
I realize that while stopped it will not be efficient but underway it improves
especially with some scoop arangement.
The other components will be an electric compressor and the largest
alternator available for a 3.6 Carrera engine.
The under dash will be an early 911 Behr unit which includes 2 control knobs.
I'll do the fab work myself, my questions are about the concept.

Any ballpark on the time required to install an AC kit?

Warren's engine is out so any needed work on it can be done on the stand as it's built. As many of you know I have a fully equipped shop.
I have use of a pump and the gauges.

Problem is the exit air. It's a tight fit and there is really no place for the air to go and nothing pulling it thru, so it won't be nearly as effective as the engine lid mount.

I agree.
Without an outlet the flow is limited.
The solution would be to open the top of the rear quarter (above and behind the
rear wheel) which would be effective but not easy to make attractive.
Modern Porsche GTs do have inlets in front of and outlets above and behind
front wheels. This on a 914GT rear quarter would have a very 'novel'
appearance.
How about this; run finned radiator tubing the length of the rocker....and back
to increase condenser capacity. Of course with some 'suggestion' of a rocker
cover....perforated...louvered, whatever to allow exchange.

It would need everything short of the under dash evaporator unit. I'll try to check out the blower and overall condition over the weekend. Updated condensor coil, receiver/dryer, compressor, hoses, etc from what was originally supplied.

My wallet is shrinking as the LOC grows...

Finding a suitable place to install the condensor coil and fan seems to be the biggest problem. A smaller under dash evaporator would save the center console, although it would also lessen effectiveness towards the driver position.
