You need to remove the upper column to access it, remove the 6mm bolt (lower left on the column) and the "C" clip on the shaft, and the column should slide up and off. The switch is held in place by a screw.

From what I remember there is more to it than that. The turn signals and the wiper washer needs to be unhooked and all of the stuff needs to be kept together as the switches come out. Don't try to pull the turn signal stuff up without unplugging the connectors or it will come apart and you won't like that outcome. It sounds like you have already got past the turn signal sw though. Seems like there is a how to on pelican or here.

Hello, old thread dig up. Is this the same process for a 71/72? Need to install a new key tumbler. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

perfect thanks. And looks like I have the wrong tumbler. I purchased a 71-76. But these images look like my 1970 that I had which used basically a bug tumbler.

You can remove the steering lock from the column and the lock cylinder from the steering lock, ONLY if you have a working key. Do you have a replacement cylinder?

I purchased the Bilstein (hopefully it is correct for the 71):

right now, I would accept a Doritos engaging the starter.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

@broomhandle
reviving an older thread here- did your Bilistein brand starter switch work? i had a no start the other day , it had to push start, when i got home it restarted fine, but i don’t want to take any chances, need to replace the switch, i ordered 3 of them, Bilistein , Mahle, and standard. the first 2 are made in Germany not china so i’m hoping either will work and last fine, i did a china one a couple years ago that didn’t work for long at all, and this one was a used one i had laying around i had to put back in when the 6 month old china one fail. So just wondering if the new german ones are working fine for others?
my car is. ‘75 2.0

look in your "Tech Tips 700" there is the procedure there, do not have to remove the wiper and turn signal switches like you do in the earlier cars

I went to a left side switch that a member here sold as a kit. Just pulled the plug off the column switch and plugged it onto the new switch.

i bought 3 new ignition switches.
1- Bilistein, is german
2. Meyle is German made,
3. SMK or something like that- it’s from China.

i’m going to put the Bilistein one in. i think i spent $25 on all 3 including shipping.
Right now since my one no contact last week ans having to push start, it’s started 4x just fine. might wait, not sure.
