Close to seven who sells the fan splitters http://www.autoatlanta.com/Porsche-Heater-...PN-BMIS400.html Thanks! The price isn't bad, but I don't need the hose. I am going to try some 60mm hose that is closer to the original material. @dr914@autoatlanta.com George can I get just the splitter? I just don't need the hose sitting on a shelf unused... |

I had a WTB ad up to find the hose splitter, that resulted in getting directed to a thingiverse.com 3d printing .stl file of a stockish looking single hose adapter.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2301723 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2290245 Using that as a starting point I added 2 60mm ports to it along with holes for the stock spring pins and I added clearance to the sides to look more like the original. I also made 60mm adapters for the heat exchanger ends so I can used the aluminized stiffer hose that is available. I'll probably add a support in the middle, but it stands up pretty well by itself. I borrowed this pic from @skota23 in another topic. Does anyone know where to buy the hoses like this? I have seen and tried others but they have issues and I wanted to try these. Looking for a pictorial on the eng compartment heater components from the exchangers heat valve’s and blower. Does the hot air get pulled through the blower. Thanks |

Looking for a pictorial on the eng compartment heater components from the exchangers heat valve’s and blower. Does the hot air get pulled through the blower. Thanks the blower in the engine bay is there for max power - i would suggest for demisting the windscreen. (the cabin is small and mists up quickly - at least in north american windows - less so in north antarctica where i live. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ). more normally the engines own cooling fan with its small bleed ducts and flaps down on the underside of the fan housing blow the air heated by the heat exchangers through the ducting in the sills into the cabin. i believe this is why the later cars (73 on) have the biased connection only the left hand side heat exchanger and valve. its there really to demist the windscreen in front of the driver when conditions mean the cabin fogs up. down here in north antarctica i rarely have the need to pull the floor lever all the way up and activate the engine bay blower fan. the more normal heating settings using the slide controls on the dashboard and red lever slightly raised which open up the cooling fan fed warmed air through the valves do the job. the red lever cable operates the valves connected to the heater exchangers. the fan only comes on when its fully raised. |

Another group I am in, someone mentioned things like this; https://www.acehardware.com/departments/too...ssories/2390011 https://www.acehardware.com/departments/too...ssories/2389906 https://www.acehardware.com/departments/too...ssories/2389963 I don't want to go too far down that road. We had a joke on a 4 wheel drive forum I am on about the pvc snorkle kit. Don't want to approach that level of home grown. Ace is the place... |

Note that at least on my car the outlet on the blower and inlet on the heat exchanger are 55mm ID, not 60mm. (I'm leaving the plastic square-to-round part on, it is in good shape).
I found some "Webasto" 55mm ID heater hose - designed for external heating units for RV's and such - it is a 3 layer hose, black plastic outside over a layer of paper and aluminum on the inside. It looks reasonably close to original. I have a 3D print project for a splitter, but haven't run it yet, as I am currently working on the T-Bird and it's been a much deeper dive than I thought. I probably won't get back to working on the 914 before mid-late spring. This one is designed to print without needing support material - i.e. everything 45° or more from the horizontal. |

Just completed this hose swap on our 1974 914 2.0 (single hose) going through some of the tips offered here. I had four different blower hoses to compare including a 55mm reinforced hose sold to us from our Porsche mechanic (which was the wrong size), the 914 rubber 60mm blower hose, the Dorman 2-1/4in Defroster Hose (part #96003 @ autozone), and a 2-1/4" reinforced aircraft blower hose. My initial impressions for each hose.
1) 55mm hose: This was sold to us to replace the original OEM molded-plastic hose by our mechanic. Was too small to fit the blower adapter (55mm OD) or the lower intake adapter (57mm OD). 2) 914rubber hose: I liked the quality, but the hose was just too large at 60mm ID. The hose did not fit well on the blower or lower intake without having a lot of space to crunch the hose clamp down. I would not recommend this. 3) Dorman 2-1/4 ID" hose. Fit the outlet/inlet perfectly, much better than the 914 rubber hose. Looked good, but it was a bit lighter duty than expected, thinner material and didn't hold it's shape as well as the neoprene rubber hoses. Overall, this was definitely usable, but I'd recommend a few more straps to secure the hose, especially if using the longer dual hose setup. Came in 6ft length, so more than needed to do the project. 4) Cat-9 Ducting 2 1/4 ID" for airplanes: This was the best hose of the bunch and the one I ended up using. Fit snug around the lower inlet and clamped down well. Was a reinforced neoprene hose, so held it's shape too. My only issue was it has two fiber glass textile reinforcements around the outside of the hose (I thought it was rope but it's not), which was a bit messier to cut and make look clean at the ends. I am not 100% sure if this is a suitable replacement, so would be interested in hearing your feedback. For the install, I trimmed the ends of the hose to length using a technique where I put a hose clamp around the hose at my cut point, then trimmed around hose clamp edge with a utility knife (crossing over where the wire was). At the wire, I used a pair of snips to cut the wire and separate the pieces. I then used the snips again to cut about 2" back from the wire end and pulled out the cut wire to avoid any potential "meat hook". This resulted in a clean edge, but again, the fiberglass reinforcement ends were hard to keep clean looking and it did float around when you cut it. Overall I'm happy with it. I imagine you can pull off the white fiberglass reinforcements too if you didn't like the look of the white. They also sell an orange version of the aircraft heater hose rated for even higher temps, but that likely isn't necessary. Again, would be very interested if anyone has used this style of aircraft hose or see any issues with it being used. Attached a few photos. |
