Over the past couple of weeks of winter; Sorted out the electrical gremlins, welded bungs in the exhaust, hooked up the Wide Band O2 gauge and got the Webers synched at idle.

Milestone today, went to the MA DMV and got plates for the 914. I dread going to the DMV, but we lucked out today and got the plates within 30 minutes with no nonsense.

It was cold enough today that the roads were dry, so we slapped on the plates and went down the road.
(My first time driving a 914.)
The O2 guage was showing really lean ( 16.5 AFR) and the engine had no pep, so we made it a really short ride. Ordered some bigger jets. Was running 115 main, ordered 130 based on a quick calculation of flow needed. The idle was lean too, so ordered 55s to replace the 50 idle jets.

The transmission didn’t like downshifting into 1st when the car was moving, is that normal for these cars?

Tim,
I've had two 901 boxes, one perfect and the other not so. Neither would shift into 1st unless I was at a dead stop. Great work by the way. Maybe see you sometime this summer if there are any MA meet ups. John

Congratulations on your first drive in a 914. Most 901's will downshift into 1st as you are coming to a stop at low speed. They are finicky at times about going into 1st if you are sitting in neutral at a stop. I usually go into 2nd first and then pull it into 1st if I have been sitting in neutral. Car looks nice. When I had my transmission apart to reseal it, I readjusted the clearances between the shift shafts and 1st/rev it shifts into gear when sitting at a stop from neutral easier now. It always shifted into 1st below 15-20mph with ease. Before the adjustment it the transmission did not like to shift into 1st from neutral at a stop. So I would shift into 2nd or 3rd then 1st. Beautiful 914 by the way.

Thanks for the feedback on the car and shifting into 1st. Looking forward to getting a real ride soon and getting the real 914 experience. New Weber jets come tomorrow but need to wait for the roads to dry off, this car has seen too much salt in its life.
