...Nuther, couldn't resist...the 2.7 going into the '74. I kept the engine N/A for 1,000 miles to seat the rings. Single rajay turbo went in after break-in. It was a handful with the narrow tires and small brakes (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/lol2.gif)
Hope it works out for you !
Marty

Seems to me it is either going to stay tight or not. Worrying about it won't change anything. Drive it until it breaks. Then decide what to do.

I would accept "it will take torqueing" over "it ain't ever gonna take torque", any day.

Me too...

I hope like hell this works.

I still haven't heard how the studs pull. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

Just how to fix them and how to be prepared when they do.

Where is SHLITZZ when you need him?

Also, is the "pulling stud" thing mainly a "six" phenomena? (looked up the spelling in the dictonary{sp}!)

John

P.S. I seem to read it more with the sixes, I think..... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif)

Studs pull because steel studs expand at a lesser rate than Aluminum. Mostly this happens in hot climates with the thermal reactors in place or otherwise when an engine is allowed to overheat. The stud is a bunch stronger than the threads in the magnesium.

The best cure is Case Savers...not time certs + Divilar studs + a real good external oil cooler + all the cooling mods you have ever heard of. In 4 years of running, my engine has never seen over 100C (212F)...per the gauge.....all of the above were done.....In fact, I have trouble getting it warm enuff at AX. One of the problems I have is that the temp gauge doesn't work...

I understand how thermal dynamics affect different base metal/alloys but I am looking for some real world experiences....

If the mag case will gradually grow weaker and weaker and allow the stud to drift even though it "seems" it's being re-torqued over and over, I need to know....

Thanks..

I think case savers and divilar studs can be a fairly permanent cure for the magnesium cases....as long as the heat is reasonably well controlled. I understand that this became a problem when the displacement grew from 2.4 to 2.7...more stress on the mag case and less material around the spigots...combined with more heat. Some of the 2.7's had a fan with fewer blades in an attempt to reduce fan noise. Another good thing upgrade for 2.7's.
When Porsche went to the 3.0, the cases were again made from aluminum and stud pulling is rare...but the early divilar studs were prone to corrosion and breaking.

It's done!!!

Went to my mechanics place to check on things and he is finished. Took the car out for a quick test drive and it runs really well.

Sounds like how a bad ass six should. This thing is fast. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/burnout.gif)

Apparently the head leak was screwing up everything. Even the 46mm carbs seem alot more agreeable.

I hope it stays together for awhile.

A six always runs/sounds better than a five. Here's hoping it will last. Enjoy

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/boldblue.gif) I would ponder and say WTF, but I am just glad to see it torqued up and is holding. that is a GOOD sign! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif)
