Damn! Really sorry Mike. Glad your both OK. Not to make the guilt any worse, but tell Chris that any hit that will break teeth is going to hurt for a while.

When I looked at the first pic of your shoulder on my iphone I thought it was yer ass!

Glad you both came out of it relatively OK. It looks like it really could have been a lot worse.
You could always build another Thunderbus with that motor..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
I hope you both heal up fast.
As was said before, maybe the rest of us will take a moment & be a bit more careful. Sh!t happens, and if most are like me, we tend to be a little right foot heavy.

As said many times before .....cars can be replaced. I have driven that same road many many times over the last 40 years. Yes and taking those turns at 35 can be done in a 914....that said I suspect that the road may have still been a tad damp and oil filmed.Remember that is a low spot and the road floods there all the time. (road floods, water pools, all the oil from no rain for over a week flows to the low point).
A speedy recovery to you both.

Good point. I cant be sure at this point if the road was completely dry as I dont remember. Today any evidence was washed away as it has been raining pretty good.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) Oh My God, Mike Dr. Evil, that is such terrible news! And so unfair!! We all know that our cars were made to take the twisties - hell, I drive Babydoll 60 to 65 on the roads in my neighborhood, and they are much more twisted than your pics. It had to be the gravel, not enough road for your tires... I daresay you didn't do anything wrong, the damned road was too narrow. And I'll wager your car was mechanically sound, considering who works on her. And you had to be driving conservatively 'cause you had a passenger. So, it's the road. Thank all that's holy that you and Chris came out of it walking, and still relatively intact. I've been told for years by skeptics that *nobody* walks away from a 914 crash. You're improved my faith in the breed. And I really admire your attitude - fix up another 'teener and get back out there. Just beware of e.v.i.l. skinny roads.

If there was any shade on the road, it was probably damp. The rain Sat Night and then the fog and humidity Sunday kept everything around me from being dry. A little bit of water on the road is worse then a lot.

Also, it was flat out COLD here yesterday (like I was wearing long pants cold). Unless your tires were all season, they were probably hard as hockey pucks. This is a huge cause for accidents in this area. Sporty cars are sold with summer tires as stock. As soon as the temps drop below ~50, they may as well be driving on ice.

Get well soon Chris.

Mike, gimmie a call when you need some help with stuff.

Damn, that sucks bro. Your car was very nice. I hope you and Chris heal up quick. Remember, teeth are overrated, and chicks dig scars...

Your next 914 will be even better, we all have things we would have done differantly on our cars and now heres your chance. I will be looking for your new build thread.

My good wishes are with you - take it easy...

I am sorry, but I cannot agree. As much as I respect Mike, it was not the road, not the gravel, not the tires, not the car. The only thing that can ever make a mistake like this is the driver. Mike has said as much in this thread, and please Mike, please don't feel like I'm heaping sh*t on you.

The issue was that the driver lost his situational awareness. It happens to all of us every day. Whether we unintentionally take a curve a little wide, a corner too fast, or fail to check the inflation in our tires. Our responsibility is to our passengers, ourselves, and our car.

As for the end-result, I honestly believe that Mike used his not-trivial driving skills in bleeding off speed prior to impact. That's what made a potentialy disasterous crash end up as a bent car from which everyone walked away. He may not even have done this consciously, but his driving skills probably automatically kicked-in. I give Mike all the credit in the world for minimizing the potential for human trauma that could have ocurred.

The thing we all need to remember is that we choose to drive a 35 year old automobile. As such, we as owners and drivers are the only persons or items responsible when such an event ocurrs.

I think the original post was not intended to be taken so seriously Eric.

That sucks Mike; but as everyone else had said, it is the people who cannot be replaced. You guys both had someone looking out for you, that could have been a lot worse. Hopefully Chris heals up quickly.

once a mid engine car gets sideways, its virtually impossible to correct it (moreso than any other car from what ive heard)

but yea, it was a nasty accident, but could have been worse.
