I replaced the push rod seals the other day, then adjusted the valves. Turns out the previous owner painted the 27 degree advance mark white, so I assumed that was TDC the whole time. I just repainted it red like it's supposed to be and did the real TDC mark in white, but wondering if I should go do the valves again or if the advance mark is close enough?

Also, last time I did the valves with the heat exchangers off and it was pretty easy but looks like they're totally in the way now.. aarg Do you guys usually pull them off or work around them? thanks

Heat exchangers do not need to come off. However, mine are off permanently as I drive in SoCal, so it does give me lots of room in which to work.

But getting back to your original question... I have done the same. But I finally gave in and started to use Cap'n Krusty's method. His process completely ignoors the TDC marks, and works per the position of the rockers themselves.

Once I started using his method, I was always correct the first time, adn my valves got much, much quieter.

just curious, has anyone ever checked to see what is happining with regard to clearance at TDC after using the above method ? I can see some possible problems here with some aftermarket cams and steel pushrods.
