Years ago, I needed to replace the bearings on either my Ghia or 914, and the VW dealer wanted an arm & leg for OEM.

I took the part number from the bearing and called a local bearing specialty house in Denver, and they had the exact same part for less than 1/4 of what the dealer wanted.

Anyone know a cross ref. part number for rear wheel bearings?

How about the dozens of bearings on ebay? Any good?
Any ideas for the best deal?

Oh, and what is the deal with the rear bearing seals?
The manual states that if these are damaged, the entire trailing arm needs to be replaced...

While I'm at it. Both arms are off and I am cleaning them up.
What does everyone suggest I do while I have them off?

I plan on painting them, but what else should I do while I'm at it?

I have the welder at the ready, so I could do some reinforcing too.

don't know cross reference but PET shows 999.053.035.00 so maybe you can use that to get what you want.

There are no rear bearing seals. You may be confused about the control arm bushings, I think they are what the manual is refering to. They are now replaceable.

443 407 625 is another number. We have several different brands as low as 24.50 to as high as about 55 bucks.

513106 is the generic number for the 914 rear wheel bearing.

Thanks! I could probably find them at an industrial supply even cheaper, but they cannot cross-reference the number above. Any chance there is another number like NA107464 or something similar?

If I remember they were only ~$10 ea last time, but that was almost 20 years ago.

Here is another bearing related question:
The bearings feel fine and turn very smoothly out of the car.
However since I want to cleanup & strengthen the arms, I needed to break them all the way down.

I knocked the spindles out using a 30mm socket and a hammer since I was planning on replacing the bearings anyway.

Does this damage the bearings ( as opposed to pressing them out )? ....should I just reuse them for now?

It destroys the bearings. No way would I install a "generic" bearing in this application, ESPECIALLY a Chinese made part. Do it right, do it once. BTW, after you press in the bearing (or use the "chill and drop" method, you MUST press (or draw) the hub into place. NEVER hammer it. Ever.

I'm with the Cap'n. Of all the maintainance tasks on a 914, rear bearings are my least favorite. Aside from the possible safety issues, it seems better to buy decent name brand bearings and extend the period between changes.

That, and when you put it all back together, don't forget the anti seize!

Could you explain the "chill and drop" method?
Is just putting it in my freezer overnight good enough? Or Dry Ice ( or I could take all the parts to work with me and use liquid nitrogen ;-)

I am used to heating things up to get them together, but obviously we dont want to heat the bearing enough for that to work.

I would just press them in with my vise, but I dont think the jaws open enough with the bearing installed in the arm already.

Looks like I'll just order them from www.PMBPerformance.com, but I want to inspect the CV joints first (didnt get that far last night) before I place the order.

Eric has a video for removal and reinstall on his website.

I know from working in the bike industry there are many different grades of bearings. They cheap ones will sometimes fall apart before your even done the install. Buy the best you can and install per directions.

I don't think I'd have a problem with installing a Timken 513106 "generic" bearing; I suspect it X-ref's with all the majors (FAG, Fafnir, etc, etc). I agree with avoiding the Chinese ones.

List is correct, but I thought it was longer.

Just take the number off the damn bearing and call a bearing supplier.
They don't care what it fits.

get the best bearings you can get. installing them is a medium PITA and I wouldn't like to do the task every year. I let my bearings sit for 3-4 days in the freezer before I installed them. one side just dropped in, the other need very light tapping on the OD. make sure the arm surfaces are clean before you drop them in. in addition, I used a very thin coat of cooper paste.

I have a pair of SKF in boxes on my desk. The 999 number is there as well as BA2B633457 and 394 43020 365. On the inner race it says 633457.
They're made in Spain. You know what they say about those Spanish made bearings...

It's a good time to replace the bushings. How about the brake calipers? Did you rebuild them? When I did mine I painted my calipers and I regret not having them plated like Eric does to his.

I'm not sure about plating, never gone through the process. Keeping the bearing races clean might be an issue.

I taped over the bearing races with gorilla tape and tossed them in a poly cement mixer with a bunch of sand for a couple of hours. Clean as a whistle. Then added reinforcement, tumbled them shortly again and had them powder coated. Since I was there, did new bushings too.
