If not, can anyone recommend a decent replacement? Mine is just about shot, ok, its shot, the car would not start today for the first time. It's been getting progressively worse.

You can still get the OE electrical inserts from most of the usual sources - not too pricey IIRC either, & just replace that part. Just make sure that they're not selling you the crappy aftermarket ones in disguise.

Like from who? Pelican sold me a crappy aftermarket one.

The electrical connections internally broke after 2 start ups. This was 6 months after I bought it.. It was a non porsche part and was most certainly from China.

The early ones (72-74) from Pelican/SSF are made by MEISTERSATZ, P/N 111 905 865 K.

The late ones (75-75) are listed as ELECTRIX - POR, P/N 111 905 865 L.

I'm not sure if anyone else has access to different suppliers and can divulge if other MFGs are listed.

That is also a VW part. May be cheaper to purchase from a VW site:

May be a VW part number eh?

Just called my local VW parts house and was given the following info.

They have them for 15 bucks, same 1 year warrenty as everyone else. Plain white box (Same as the pelican parts one I bought). I told him I bought a Meistersatz one and he said they are owned by CC and probably manufacture in China. The only way to get something different is to get one from the Porsche or whomever actually has a NOS product (George @ AA said he had some a while ago for ~ $40, but I dont see it on the web site).

The factory part will have an MWO stamped on it. It lists for $59.50 from the dealer. If you are buying one for $9.95, it is not the "factory" switch. Sure it may be made in the same factory but it has probably been rejected by the VW engineers because of to many faults in the batch that they tested. Doesn't mean that you wont get a good one, but you guys are off base on what is factory and not. I know because i just pulled on off the shelf and looked at it.

These are not NOS. There are 178 of these stocked in VW/Audi warehouses across the country and in Canada. That is in the warehouses, not what is stocked at the dealers.

You may very well be correct. My experience has been that the parts that are interchangeable from VW and Porsche are way more expensive if you order them as Porsche Parts. I have ordered several parts from VW dealers and they have been 30 to 50% less and the exact same part. I have an entire spreadsheet that has a list of "Porsche" parts that were also used by VW or vise versa.

Like I said, I have no knowledge of exactly where the switch came from, the site says that it is OE, take it for what it is worth. I have no affiliation to the site, simply did a search for the part.

You might also consider installing a hot start relay to protect that new ignition switch, also available at Pelican Parts.

My 1974 has been plagued with ignition switch problems. It had a broken one when I bought it, Brad Mayeur put in an aftermarket which promptly broke. I put in another aftermarket and it became intermittent a year later.

Brad was able to find a NOS for me, I posted lots of pics in that thread. I have an aftermarket as a backup. I even have a low mileage ignition assembly with a different key (I'm lazy and haven't rekeyed it yet) and an original switch in it.

Maybe there are tiny clearance differences, who knows? There is talk about wrapping some paper around the switch on Pelican to thicken one area of the switch as it sits in the assembly, maybe that will make it work better. Right now my NOS is working fine. Ask me again in a year!
