"Dixie Chicken" by Little Feat may not be a road song, but they did a song on their first album (yes those vinyl discs!) named "Willing" that was.
It went something like this...
"I've driven every kind of rig that's ever been made,
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed,
If you give me weed, whites, and wine.."
The old days,
Mike

Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Great tempo. Starts out nice and slow to get the engine warmed up, then kicks it up a little for some spirited driving. Great if you've got a route to match it.

I was reminded of that song, Willin, as I drove through Tucumcari last November, also passed through Winslow, AZ, thinking of the song "Take It Easy". Didn't see the girl in the flatbed Ford, though

I had to read all four pages of this thread to see if I had anything to add.
Runnin' Down a Dream - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Don't Come Around Here No More - Tom Petty
Ceremony - Joe Satriani
Summer Song - Joe Satriani
Nativity in Black - Black Sabbath
Psycho Man - Black Sabbath
The Rooster - Alice in Chains (song about his dad)
In particular I like songs that have you going 100 on the highway for no good reason except it feels good.

Jon, I've found myself going 100 to Tom Petty before... I like 'em all 'cept for the black sabbath ones, which I don't know. But it would seem you have good taste. I might have to check them out.
Someone else mentioned Meatloaf's paradise.. My ex was from Modesto, and I remeber driving around town with him listening to meatloaf while he told me the story of American Graffiti. Very cool...

Taste in music and cars, these are some of the important things we must pass on to future generations.
I think if we put together mix CD's and passed them out at our drives the number of "incidents" would go up

Ok,
I finally have my own account.
I didn't see Detroit Rock City yet.
My story is around "Trans-Am". We were caravaning down to the Street Machine West Coast nationals one year. My friend had a 71 Z28. I gave him my tape of Sammy. We had CB's going full blast between the 2 cars. All of a sudden I saw my tape almost go flying out the window. He stopped short of letting go. But let me know that he didn't appreciate the song much.
For those who don't know, one part of the song goes, "my Liscense is IEATZ28.
Anyway. Great list. Who has it on one sheet of paper?

Trust your mechanic to mend your car
Bring it in to his garage
He tightens and loosens a few spare parts
One thing's fixed, another falls apart

To Brad and the rest of the Texan contingent...what about the true Texas love song...I love my Truck' by Lyle Lovett?? For driving music, give me the early Stones, any Motown and earily Led Zepplen. James Brown's Cold Sweat...OMG that is the one for a hot night at high speed. Afterwards, I like something soothing like Kate Webster, or Brenda Boyken's Smokin' Blues. Also, in the summer on a warm evening I need the Doors. Long live rock! Jim
