I have no idea were these flairs came from. I bought the car with them on. I believe the other 914 is an original 914-6 GTClick to view attachment Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentClick to view attachment

I'm looking for something a little different than the standard 914-6 flares we see. They do look good, but are there other options that are more unique?

Fronts are Patrick Racing flares. Backs are 11" further modified by McMark. Look nice when they are freshly painted.

2 questions about flares.

#1 Is there any other places besides Tangerine that sells them?

#2 What the difference between fiberglass & Steel?
Cairo94507
I love the Tangerine Racing flare. I do not believe it is available elsewhere. As for glass or steel…..I have never liked glass flares and if I was doing flares, unless it was on a dedicated track car, they would be steel. The steel will not suffer stress cracks or easily break if someone were to tap it.

Very nice and certainly worthy of COTM! Do you have any detailed pics of the install or closeups of the way the fasteners attach the flares? Nice style!

I will tell you after having my fenders done custom by a local shop, the price of Tangerine's flares are more than fair. I didn't go as big as theirs so they aren't exactly what I needed. That said, if you want the clean factory look retained and room for plenty of tire, I can't imagine a better or more cost effective solution.

I was also wondering if you've experienced any buffeting or cracking of the fiberglass due to air pressure building up in the flares (as big as they are) and would venting prevent this, making it more aerodynamic? Something to think about at 120 plus...
carr914
You've got more things to worry about at 120mph+, like the back end wanting to lift off the ground!
nick mironov
A few years ago, I made these from the front fenders of a 91 Pontaic Grand Prix. I bought them new and I recall thet they were inexpensive. Never did get them on the car...

They were too long, so after I cut out the flare, I shortened it by taking aout about a 1.5" piece put of the middle. Looks like a good fit same squarish shape as the 914 fenders and the same width edge. Depends on how you fit them, you will get 215 under them for sure, and maybe 225s.

At the risk of offending everyone possible, I still don't understand why people graft on fenders from a completely different era or generation or brand/model. It might seem cool at the moment, but step back later and look at it again... It's just looks wonky. SC is bad enough, but Rabbit and Grand Prix get progressively horrible.

I think some other types from other cars may work but really haven't seen any that do. The visual balance is so important on these cars, that's why I wanted to get as many perspectives as possible. I've seen some interesting ideas!

Finding flares that flows with the 914 lines is hard. Personally I think the GT flares look a bit too much like fenders of a US dually pick up sad.gif

But i have to say, the stock GT flares have been growing on me over the years. Interestingly enough at about the same rate that the 916 look has grown uglier.

I agree, the biggest reason they are so widely used and accepted, is because they are factory design with a racing heritage. that and they do have a fairly good proportion that suits the rest of the body.

I do like the flares jim kelly posted. They are awesome but IMO slightly over the top for street use, but perfect for track use biggrin.gif

225/45-15 Hoosiers on 15x8 wheels with 4-7/8" backspacing.

Only very minor rubbing at full lock or full suspension load.

I have, in my imaginary plan to finish the car, an idea to go to 15x10's and run the big ol' 275's. But the reality of the project says "HA!" lol-2.gif , and I think that I'll be on 225's for a while once (if) I get it running again.

Cool! Thanks for the info beerchug.gif !! IMO 225s are plenty wide in the rear (it is what 80s era 911 Carreras ran stock smile.gif ) ...... I will be running slightly widened GT flares and will be running the same 225 width (probably 225/45-16) ...... the fact you fit 225s into a narrow body is fantastic ... biggrin.gif

That's why I wanted input on different styles- the GT flared look boxy but on some cars they look better than on others, almost like the color makes a difference. And it does, but it shouldn't. A body style should look good and balanced whatever the color. I want to do 225s and 245s, maybe even 265s and have it look like it was designed that way.

Nice!

That was Bill Cuddy's car. It was an ex-Ginther car. How do I know? I worked on it for several years. It was sold when he acquired an ex Roy Woods McLaren 8E and then highly modified but I don't have a picture of it in it's present state.

I've been looking at the flares on the early 70's Camaros from Motion Performance too. They're kind of a bubble flare, almost what you see on the back of the Singer 911 creations and that may look good with the squared off fender lines we have.
