Thanks again to 914world for helping us find the original engine, Drolla for agreeing to trade it for a 2.7L, and John Forbes (Black Forest a Racing) for rebuilding the 2.7L.

We are still collecting parts for the restoration. Here is what we are looking for now:

1. NOS passenger-side inner longitudinal.
2. NOS front fenders.
3. Just about all of the restoration design metal parts available.
4. 914-6 Relay Board
5. 914-6 throttle linkage - both on top of the engine and the bell crank that mounts to the transmission.
6. An original early dash top pad in excellent condition.
7. 914-6 tool kit.

I feel like I should give out cigars. I had a chance to buy a six in the late 80s. It didn't work out for personal reasons. 27 years later I bought one. I didn't know that "bucket list six" meant a bucket of parts, and a list of problems. I am stoked. Bringing her home now. Pictures to follow.

Na. This is for my son and I to restore. Besides, it is pretty rough. I don't think it would be easy to find someone as foolish as me to take it on. help.gif

...ever hear of a guy named Barnum? poke.gif

Congrats on realizing a dream. Should be a great father/son project.

Congratulations on your new purchase!

I hope you and your son enjoy the project and it should be a great bonding time for both of you.

Find a creative accountant. If you use this car to write magazine articles, it could be considered a business expense. popcorn[1].gif

Steve,

congratulations also from my side!
It's in fact a strange task to bring this project car back on the roads :respect:
Perhaps you are able to find the original engine...fingers crossed! Nothing is unpossible smile.gif although this one is heavily plundered.
Otherwise you can get a lot of parts at the sellers shop I heard biggrin.gif

Hope you will report all your steps of restoration in your mag. Is ist still out now?

Good luck with your new acquisition!

Congratulations!! I love the color. Great project. I have engine number 6404153 which I believe is from a 71. What year is this car?

Thanks. It is a '70. As soon as I have the Certificate of Authenticity (and engine number) I will start the search for the engine.

Awesome, great to see the kids out there with dad! My sons both track Miatas, and were actually the catalyst for me to get back into cars. Moving to Southern Maryland many years ago being surrounded by water, I took to racing sailboats. The kids raced with me until they reached driving age and got the car bug - now we spend much time together in the garage and at car events.

Cool. My kids were also the reason I came back to 914s after many years of . . . well, kids (I have 6, kids that is). My oldest son autocrossed his Miata. And after helping him a while I finally decided it was time for me to get back on the 914 bandwagon. That was after buying a Boxster, and coming to the conclusion that, although nice, it's a Cadillac compared to the 914. :-)
somd914
Boxster is a Caddy - I like that analogy.

My oldest is now 22. When I bought my 914 a little over four years ago, he drove it and quickly professed that I wasted my money and should have bought a real Porsche, i.e. a 911.

Fast forward three years when I buy the 911. After driving it, my oldest informs me it is time to update my will. I told him no worries, his younger brother who liked the 914 from the beginning would get it and the 911 would be his. Surprisingly my oldest's response was that he wanted the 914 and his younger brother could have the 911.

My oldest will be my co-driver (or likely the driver) for Hershey - he has fallen for teener and wants one of his own. It's a contagious disease! Watch out...

Congratulations on your new toy. I'm envious and I love that color.

What a fun project! So have you thought about what engine your going to put in it? If you can't find the original, you might as well go bigger. So do you want carbs or FI. PMO has a cool injection system. The choices are huge. Lots to dream about.

THe thread in the O&H is a great resource but takes a lot of filtering due to the conversations. This list without discussion needs to be a sticky at the top of the page IMHO smile.gif

We got the front bumper off and front trunk open. It was open when we looked a the car a week ago. But, they shut it before we picked it up, and it wouldn't open with the t-handle. Anyhow, I am surprised how clean the front trunk and cross panel are. No apparent accident damage up front. And other than a little surface rust, no serious rust.

I've been analyzing the condition of the tub, starting to disassemble, and organizing. This thing needs serious work. I am working on a plan. We will certainly need a fixture. Kent has been nice enough to give me some pointers on the fixture he built. And Rick has kindly sent me some photos and advice as well. I hope we can start to make some progress soon.

Congradulations Steve and son!!! You'll fix it, it's only metal (and $$$). If you have anymore questions, just ask, I'll help all I can. Really cool to see that you got one. I like seeing the ones that people feel are beyond repair, being saved.

A couple more original Adriatic Blue sixes.
Its pretty rare to have two 914-6 of the same color at CFR at the same time.
The narrowbody is mskala's AX car.
The widebody is a 350hp track car. Owner also has an Adriatic Blue -4 track car.

Thanks to everyone for their support and advice. I will post some pictures soon. Waiting on the COA. Locating the original engine would be very nice. We are still trying to figure out how to go about this project - Cellete vs. fixed/dedicated fixture/jig. Rick, Scotty, and Kent have all been very helpful. We will put a game plan together after Hershey, and then start the process. Right now it is just slow disassembly, parts photographing, and organization. Oh, and figuring out which of my other cars to sell. The wife says I can keep any 2 of the 3. One of the 4s will need to go, I guess.

Very nice. My wife and I have a soft spot for blue 914s. Blue and tangerine are the best 914 colors, to my eye.
stevegm
Some photos. I can't make these smaller at work. So when I get home I'll post some more.

You're missing a hubcap Steve wink.gif .

It's great to see so many sixes being restored correctly from less-than-optimal starting points. Nothing prettier than a fresh 914-6 restoration done right. I'm sure you'll get it there.
Harpo
Looks good. Can't wait to see more photos

Actually, missing two - both rears.

In parts collection mode right now. Hershey was great. But, I spent so much time in the tent that I didn't get much of a chance to look for parts. Here is what we are looking for:

1. NOS sheetmetal pieces - Sail panel replacements, fenders, chassis pieces, etc.
2. 914-6 relay board
3. 914-6 oil tank (original)
4. Two 914-6 hubcaps (with the Porsche Crest in the middle)

Thank you Craig from Camp 914 for the windshield chrome. It will look great on the car.

6 kids/3 914's does not sound like an unfair ratio to me, you need to do a little more negotiating. smile.gif

With six kids, I probably owe her whatever she wants. Besides, I'm the 7th kid. Or so she says. I'm kinda a one car guy anyway. Hard to fall in love with more than one car at a time. :-)

Scored a set of NOS windshield chrome from Camp 914. I don't think I have ever seen new 914 chrome before. Thanks Craig.
