Oh - there it is!

It's been 16 months since I lost the oil and froze it up. It's almost weird to see it back where it belongs! I'm hoping I'll be able to try and fire it up on Thursday!

P.S. - That new motorcycle jack made this the easiest Type IV install I've ever done.

Damn that looks good!!! I knew I should have powder coated the tins to match the car. Damn it! damn it! damn it!

I WISH it was powder coat. It's just Ace Hardware rattle can paint, but it's called Sunflower Yellow and it matches the VW Sunflower Yellow on the car.

Yellow IS Faster.....................

This may look like just any ordinary, fast 914 resting quietly next to it's beloved jackstands, but no - this 914 touched the ground at 11:45 p.m. tonight for the first time in many, many, many months.

It didn't seem fair to the neighbors to try and fire it up anymore tonight so I'll hold that for tomorrow when I get home from work. I can hardly wait, but I'm also as nervous as can be. After fixing the clutch tube, moving the fuel pump, and overhauling the engine I'm hoping that all goes smoothly tomorrow.

Watch this space for updates tomorrow!

P.S. - I saved the worst job for last. I HATE reattaching the outer ends of the axles! Getting them to line up is pure guesswork and just when you are ready to give up they suddenly drop into place.

Well, no luck tonight. First I discover that I hadn't hooked up the transmission ground strap - can't believe I missed that. I check everything else and discover that I missed plugging in the alternator harness to the relay board.

At this point I know I have fuel pressure and I have spark, but the engine hasn't even coughed yet. I suspect that the FI system isn't powered. I won't be able to work on it until Monday because I have to go to Phoenix this weekend. At least I'll get to sit down with my son and look over the wiring diagrams to get a sense of how to tell if I'm right about the FI. The only other clue is that I have no oil indicator light when I turn on the key. I think maybe I'll start another topic to ask for technical input.



It will be worth a couple more days after all this time to make sure I get it right and don't just stumble around.

I like the yellow tin. It really makes the engine compartment look nice and clean. Good luck with the start up.

Where'd you get that motorcycle jack from? I hear some of them have interference from the jackbar point hitting the tranny etc.

I got it from Pep Boys - $45 after a rebate.

It does have some interference from the rear section of the jack. The hydraulic part is fixed and does not swivel so when you lower the jack that section does not go down even though the front part lowers. This means that I ended up with the engine down and the tranny up when I slid it under the car. That was OK because I just used my regular floor jack to lift the car a little and just slid it under - didn't even have to remove the rear valance!

Cool, I was wondering if it was that Pepboys one in the ad a couple weeks ago. Sounds good. The tranny needs to be dropped less than the engine anyway so no big deal. I might look around for one of those jacks...too bad there are no pep-boys in my area.
