Okay, i know of 4 options for monoballs that will fit our cars.

looking for feedback on any of them, particularly the rennline product, as it's the cheapest option (and since i've cut my chassis/strut-mounts, i don't need aftermarket camberplates to get more camber).

look similar to the tarret, but weltmeister stuff is generally quite a bit higher on the 'crap' factor. don't have a price.

okay, they make good $hit. only a bearing, doesn't include camber plates or anything -- but again, i don't need these. they are "sealed" for protection from the elements. $295

these are also sealed, come without strut mounts, just the bearing, but only cost $225. i can almost swallow that, but i'm wondering if the quality is as high as elephant racing.

yeah, i've handled the tarret ones. they are nice, i just don't need the plates that come along with them.

definitely don't need to gain more neg camber. after my modifications, i can get up to -3.0 LF and -3.4 RF. which is plenty. however, in doing these mods, i realized how flexible that rubber really is. next time you have your strut out, stick a pipe into the strut mount from above and wiggle it around. unbelievable how much it gives, and my rubber is in really good shape. that can't be good for handling....

so yeah, i want the zero-give factor. it makes me horny.

how do the balls attach to the strut mount???

BTW - whats the next weakest link?? think the fender/body mount will begin to give???

one uses the stock strut mounts. i believe that each cartridge comes together from either side of the mount. which is nice, cause i won't have to re-align the car later. pita.

as for the next weakest link, that's a good question, but having cut part of it, i believe that area of the chassis is pretty damn strong.

If you don't need the extra neg camber, you don't need to spend the big bucks on the Tarett strutmounts
(or the Wevo's which are equally nice)

Dito for the weltmeister plates.
Those wouldn't be my choice anyway since I've heard some bad stories about those...

So what you need is a monoball insert (which just replace the rubber part in your stock strutmount)
I had the Elephants on my 911. They're nice and they come with a weatherseal (not sure that's needed though - when I got 'em it wasn't an option yet)
What I specially like about the Elephant's is that you don't need no weird-ass spanners or other "use em once and never again" tools. Just a pair of those big adjustable wrenches (what do you call those in English?) which you can pick up everywhere for cheap and you can use for other stuff as well

Not sure what the ones from Smart Racing cost, but they've got 'em
IIRC Stromski Racing (check the ads in Excellence) has some cheaper ones
And there's an outfit in Canada that has cheap ones (google on Villeneuve and Porsche)

Installing is pretty simple.
Unbolt the top of the shock (not the strutmount!) and get it out of the way
Cut or burn the stock rubber part out of the strutmount and replace it with the monoball insert
Put the shock back through it
No need to get a realignment

Stomski and RennLine parts are uniformly excellent. i have (various) parts from both of them, and Elephant, and IMO you will have no qualms about the quality from any of them.

i'm using the WEVO CamberKing, but the 911 *needs* a strut brace, and a 914 doesn't...

seriously though, I have a set (of the inserts) on my 911 made by Strasse, I think I paid $198~200 for them when they first came on the market a few years ago.

cool guys -- this was just the feedback i wanted. i just pulled the trigger on the rennline units. $225 + shipping, comes with its installation tool.

will report back on how effective it is, hopefully it will get here on friday, so i can sport it at the AX on saturday...

not a bad price, either. $195 canadian... shit, i think i spent that on lunch the other day here in cali... not gonna cancel my order, though. the rennline's ought to do the trick just fine.

Damn it! You know if you say they make a big improvement, I'll have to fork out some dough and buy some too.

grant, they're worth like 25hp -- each -- at the rear wheels. you should get some.
