Yes, boys and girls. It's about to happen. Jake and I have struck a deal on his "loaner" engine. It is 2316 cc, 186 HP of pure power. As Jake explains it was used as a test engine for different set ups for his dyno tests and than loaned out to guys while thier engine's were being rebuilt.
Now I've got to fab up some wheelie bars for my car.
Let see.... if a stock 914 had 90 hp and weighed 2200 pounds that is 24.44 pounds per HP.
My car will have 186 HP and weigh 1400 pounds or 7.52 pounds per HP.
So if I got this right, my car should be faster than a stock 914, right?

Sounds awesome! My tail dragger has an honest 190 hp at the wheels (i.e., dyno'ed), it's not significantly lighter than any other long hood 911, and it's scary fast within the powerband (3500 and up). Your car ought to be a screamer!

Wowie! Your average V8 conversion is about 8 lbs per HP.. Not only will you be faster, but boy will you beat them in the corners!

The long range plans do include a passenger seat.
That's why I haven't cut the pass. side floor out.
I've got two stock 914 seat shells that I'm going to rework and install. If you've never seen a naked 914 seat, it just fiberglass and pretty light when stripped down.

Paul, sorry, but that is WAY too much HP for a car as light as yours.
You're gonna put your eye out with it.

Any plans to lighten the engine?

I was toying with the idea of a fiberglass fan housing and engine tin, but it would be a whole lot of work for little gain.
But, what I will do is grind off all the tabs, brackets, tits, etc that is on the cast aluminum fan housing.
I currently don't run the stock oil cooler but with the new engine I'll put it back on.

Yep!
Paul is gonna be kickin some serious ass with this power plant!
This isn't a "normal" RAT engine, this one was used as a test engine in my 914 for a year, then stripped down and some components swapped to create the 2316 Hybrid test engine thats in the 914 now.
4 different customers of mine have "Borrowed" or rented this engine from me and it has been freshened up before the current "Borrower" received it from me.
It is built with a crazy cam, a multitude of used parts from other engines but that has never impacted its performance or reliability!
I wish Paul luck with this beast- It may not have the typical "Jake Pedigree" but it damn sure doesn't need it, this one has suprised me over and over again with reliable power . Everyone who has ever driven it is blown away by it's performance and they never would have guessed that it was anything less than one of my best engines.
To lose 15 pounds he could install some Nickies......
Paul, find a blower housing from a 80-83 Vanagon and I'll share some tricks about what to do to it- Its also lighter and has better internal partitioning than the stocker.
Paul was the perfect person for this engine- Light car, Autocrosser and thats exactly what this powerband is great for. He also understood that it was a loaner engine and what comes with that.
Paul, you need a tach that goes to 10K, I have wrapped this baby over 8K on the dyno before!

Nice score Paul should be one hell of a ride.

The difference between this engine and a 2 liter is like night and day...

Cool! That car should fly! I think my 1850 lb 85hp 1.8 car is fast so I can only imagine what twice the hp would feel like!
Think I found my case core for a Raby 2270 kit today. Although I screwed up the oil drain area while transporting it home, bolt was loose and caught the edge of my trunk - material around the drain hole is bent now - hope a good machinist can take care of that? If its ok I will probably will send the case off to Jake later this year.

You guys are both sick.
Lets see . . . . . .
Paul has a 1315 pound car.
Jake has 375 engines.
add 'em together - divided by two
Paul ends up with a 914 that weighs 845 pounds
and Jake gets 845 Type IV motors.
Would that make everyone happy?

Anyway. Paul, if you will get three fans from the 911 guys. You know the fans that were stock on the thermal reactor cars, that were used to cool them after shut down. Three of these will allow enough airflow for your situation. You could also just get some squirrel cage blowers to do teh same job. You really don't need a lot of cooling power.
Jake Raby
Jul 14 2005, 08:48 PM
Brett, how much???
Wait till you guys see the way that we are *thinking* of powering the DTM's cooling fan on the production engines for max output..
We don't know if its legal or not, but it makes Bob Kirby's stovepipe through the car to supply air to the fan seem normal...... Chris is looking into it now- You'll think I'm crazy!

Back in the day the Beetle guys would take the generator and reverse the field wires and "motor" the generator. Then the generator would turn the fan. Worked well. The stovepipe is legal, I don't care what anyone says. I will win that protest.
The problem with production is the little rule about where the alternator is located. Production rules say the alternator must remain in the stock location. I already was looking at running it off the halfshaft.

Brett, I have done the electric motor thing in a bug years ago, but it doesn't turn fast enough AND it drags the battery down quick.... My idea would REALLY annoy people and would also amaze people at the same time, but I doubt its legal.....
Brett W
Jul 14 2005, 11:13 PM
Its not illegal until you beat someone that cares. Go for it.
Yes it is rough on the battery, but ina drag race situation where it was originally done battery life was minimal anyways.

Two stroke weedeater engine...
remote mounted with the weedeater flex shaft to drive the fan... It could be mounted in the rear trunk.. Thjose flex shafts are SUPER strong- I know because my big, bad assed Stihl can cut a small tree down with its steel blade....
It can be hooked directly to the throttle to be variable speed with the real engine..
It'll only weigh a few pounds...
it can run the race gas and have the oil injected with a facet pump in line just before the intake to the engine... Its easy to find junk weed eaters and they can run WOT all day and never hurt..
Who knows if its legal-- They let guys run electric cooling fans, so whats the difference?
Can you imagine sitting on the grid with the real engine off and revving the 2 stroke??? The damn workers would have a fit! The other racers would be very annoyed too!
I REALLY want to try it! Like I said, who knows if its legal, or been tried before...
With the DTM it would be very simple to hook up, (because of the cooling fan location) AND you'd get the ultimate in cool running and even temps to boot!
Since it would feed into the backside of the fan you could use an air conditioner solenoid operated clutch to disengage the normal belt and if there was a failure of the weed eater engine a switch could be flipped to run conventional again...
