There was a recent thread from someone bringing a working transmission our of storage and wanting to give it a quick refresh before installing to prevent leaks and such. I'm getting ready to do the same and thought I had bookmarked it but obviously did not. Despite numerous google and native forum searches, I can't find it but it had great advice I could use. Anyone recall that thread?

I found my copy of Dr. Evil's DVD and watched the reassembly portion (on the disc labeled "Maybe Porn" ). What I can't remember from the other thread is whether people thought replacing the output stub axle seals should be replaced just as a precaution. I know the input shaft seal should be done and the O-ring for the speedo drive. Can't remember about the outputs though. Not planning to go any deeper than just make sure it doesn't sling dino blood all over my freshly restored undercarriage.

Brent, I just got my trans cleaned up for install, but I really need to do this as well. Please let me know what you end up with as a parts list, and where you are sourcing. I was looking at getting the reseal kit from the Bird, part # is 914-300-901-00, price $41.00. I’m not sure what all is in it as it does not specify.

I recently created a thread about overfilling the trans.

In that thread I discussed the refresh I did. I replaced the odo drive seals, input shaft seal, and the stub axle seals.
One thing I didn't do which I might end up doing is the shift input seal in the shift console. I didn't think about it at the time and now I wish I would have. It leaked when I had swepco in the trans but does not seem to be leaking now that I went with good old dino 90 weight.


Buying a seal puller was a HUGE help. I just bought the cheap one from Harbor Freight and it worked perfectly.

I looked at that Elring kit on the bird. The pic shows a complete gasket set for a complete rebuild. Since I only need the seals, I think I'm going with Genuine Porsche seals from Sunset. It winds up being a couple dollars more than the kit on the bird but doesn't leave me with a bunch of gaskets I'm not likely to use. Don't know if there is much quality difference but about the same $ out of my pocket and no left over parts to store and get ruined before I ever use them. Here's my shopping cart for Sunset with part numbers:

@AZBanks I'm assuming your 71 still has the tail shifter? Mine is side shift so I'm not sure there is a seal to replace, but someone please let me know if that's wrong so I can get that too.
