It has been a busy couple of months, but it is all official now. I am moving to Oregon!

I got a transfer approved for my job and took my family to OR this weekend and bought our first house. It doesn't have the 3 car garage that I really wanted, but it is close in my job and has everything that will keep the wife happy! All of this has been motivated by the ridiculous housing prices in the Bay Area (median is now $705,000) and the enviroment (i.e. schools) that my newborn son will be growing up in. We are very excited.

Now for the 914 content...

1. I will be in the Portland area for the WCC 2006!!

2. On my drive back home on Sunday, I saw two very clean looking yellow 914's and one orange one with chrome side door trim traveling Northbound between Eugene and Portland.

So, who in the Bay Area wants to help me move? I will be getting a large Rental Truck the last week in Sept. and two car trailers (one for the teener and one for the '69 912).

Anyone up in the Portland area wanna help my upload?

-Britain
Allan
Cool. I can't help you move but my wife and I want to move to Portland sooooo freakin bad.
Jenny
I can't believe you bought a house already. I am so happy for you and so jealous at the same time. I should be able to help you move towards the end of sept.

Congrats to you, Angel and Bryson! clap.gif

congrats........ smilie_pokal.gif

let me know what weekend the move is so that I can plan to be out of town...hahahaha
Dave_Darling
Let me know, Britain. If I'm still jobless, I'll even help drive up! (Specially if I can get you to chip in for airfare back down.) I'll crash at my folks' place out West (past Hillsborough) when we get there...

Congrats.....I gotta trailer if ya need one.... wink.gif

You mean people our age can afford houses in this world? Holy sh...

Congrats Britain. biggrin.gif
Korijo
RIGHT ON!! smilie_pokal.gif

Where in OR?
Lyressa Roberts
Well, I'm happy for you and sad for me. All my Texas folks are moving away. sad.gif

I'll see if I can help, but I will be required to work the last weekend of every quarter close, so I may not be able to help. We'll see.
drgchapman
Well come on up and enjoy the good life! I grew up in Sunnyvale, never go back to that over priced and overpopulated silicon hole. There's a bunch of us hanging around here. Where specifically are you going to be? More 914's at the A/X, love it! Let us know if we can be of any help.

Thanks to all who have replied.

We are moving to Hillsboro, OR. I work at Intel and will be living close to the campus there.

As for the trailer, I would buy it but would have no place to put it. Send me some pictures, we shall see.

Dave, I might take you up on the offer to help drive up and pay for a trip back for you. We have the rental truck with one trailer and the Yukon with the other. The probably is, we have a 6 week old baby and would have to stop several times if my wife had to drive one of the vehicles.

Lyressa, no worries. My wife and I might plan a get together for all of our friends here in Sept.

Jeff, you can only afford a house if you move out of this place. I have several friend with PhD's who graduated for one of the top graduate programs in the US for semiconductors and can't afford a house in this area. It is pretty said that people with good jobs and good education can't buy a house without having to put everything on the line with a interest only or zero down loan. You now know what I had to do to get aroud it.

Congrats on the job, baby, house....man you're busy!

FYI - Intel announced that their new plant here will add about 1000 jobs. Come one, come all to Phoenix and I'll get you a house you can afford!
andys
Better get those california plates off your car ASAP. Keyed paint, cut tires; they still do that childish sh*t up there to California types?

Anyway, hope not. Good luck in OR.

Andy
rhodyguy
shocked by the "cheap" housing were you? you couldn't have picked a nicer time to move up here. enjoy your new state. see you at portland international raceway. wait until your friends at intel discover the housing costs near the dupont (tacoma, wa) plant.

congrats on the new house/job smilie_pokal.gif
got any pics (of the house)?
nebreitling
WTG Britain! you give me a call, i'll try to get out there and help you load.
Britain Smith
Here is a few pictures. We are having the entire house repainted different colors as part of the contract. It should be really nice. The best part was that is was priced below market value for the neighborhood because the seller was "motivated" to sell. It was also on the low end of our range and therefore should allow more funds for upgrades to the house and the car!

Hey Britain I worked with Intel for 3 years in Hillsboro before I transfered to Chandler AZ. Didnt realize you were an Intel guy. Rank and review going well? biggrin.gif I lived in South East Portland for 7 years as a Bay Area transplant. Portland area is a great place to raise a family. You'll know you have assimilated when you dont run when it rains! biggrin.gif ...congrats

Oh yeah JP is going to hate you when you start AX up there! wink.gif

Also beware the Portland area housing market is quite fickle. Things can drop off in a hurry there when a major employer leaves the area. I never bought as I had a great house in the Ladds Addition I was renting for $400 per month. I couldnt justify buying a house and just invested in Intel stock which paid off quite nicely.
Korijo
OMG! my wife was raised there biggrin.gif MIL & other family still live there dry.gif

we drive down way to often laugh.gif

Wonderful house, great timing, good job, happy family.

YOU AREN'T REAL! GET OUT! smile.gif

Congrats to you Britton, good job!

No problem at all stopping when needed. I can even dig up my little walk-about radios so we can yammer all the way up, if ya like! chatsmiley.gif biggrin.gif

I've driven that trip (north-to-south) a good half-dozen times now, so it should be relatively straight-forward. It's about 12 hours, if you aren't in a super hurry. With the extra stops, it might make sense to break the trip in the middle. (That's what Mom did when she drove back up by herself.)

That assumes, of course, that I don't have someone paying me to stay put...

Air_Cooled_Nut
My only advice to Intel folks: Don't go on sabbatical otherwise they'll give your job to TWO people in INDIA mad.gif BTHIHTM (Been There Had It Happen To Me) -- and no, my ranking and ratings were good.

Congrates on the move up (in more ways than one wink.gif ). My dad's family is from Milpetas; my sister and I were born in Mt. View.

If youre in a larger moving van its easily 14 hours or even more depending how much your hauling over the mountains. I have done it both directions. Also be prepared for very hot weather up highway 5. I moved in August and hit 105 degree weather in the valley. It was not kind to my moving van. Had to stop a couple times to let things cool off.

If youre doing it yourself (I did and pocketed my relocation check!) Make sure not to go with uHaul, believe me they suck and often you will not get equipment that is ready for that length of haul. My wife and I stopped in Roseberg so we would arrive fresh the next day in Portland
Dave_Darling
Yeah, my U-haul rental didn't even make it from Sunnyvale to San Jose without puking its guts out! Dumped the ATF all over the ground, it wasn't pretty!!

And then U-haul tried to charge me extra days' rental for that POS when their people had towed it away!! Assholes....

So other than that, what's going on in your life laugh.gif

Seriously, smilie_pokal.gif . Sounds like life is falling into place for you.

Welcome Britain and family. I am near Beaverton which is the burb between Portland and Hillsboro. Craig "Camp 914" is to the south of Portland in Lake Oswego. "Camp" is located in Oregon City, another suburb to the southeast. JP is across the Columbia in " the Couv" (Vancouver, WA, USA).There will be 3 more PCA autocrosses this year, Sept., Oct. and Nov. Not sure when SCCA runs. Look forward to you joining us.

Congrats for finding roots for your family! smilie_pokal.gif

Welcome to yard maintenance and remodeling fever. You will probably powdercoat all your appliances and polish all the chrome. laugh.gif

Let me know when the move is so I can get a back brace...

I love portland, I'd move back in a minute if I could. Looks like you are off and running once you get there! It'll be weird to get used to someone pumping your gas for you though.
Bleyseng
Just stay the hell away from here as there is too many moving in as it is now!

haha, glad you can make it up to the NW.

Since I drive my teener daily, how are the gas dude's going to figure out how to fill it up? I have to hold the nozzle over the tank right now to get it full.

Remember, I relocated from Austin to San Jose when I graduated college...that fat check paid for my teener and the turbo engine for my 912. Now that I have 1 extra to add on to the relo, I get bumped up to a higher doller amount.

On that occasion, I only owned about 10ft of stuff and rented the largest Budget truck available. I then put my stuff in the first 10ft and put my 912 inside the truck. I trailered my Acura on a full trailer behind it. It was definitely the longest trip of my life...38 hours, 25mph up the hills, and about 5 mpg.

I will definitely be out there AX'ing. I will really miss the guys down here and the competition. Hey JP, I am sure that we will get to know each other. I hope that my 1.7L gets nowhere close to your car, my '69 912 turbo will be a different story though.

Welcome Britian. I, too, work for Intel, that's me in the center. I live in Beaverton (Aloha really, but you'll understand after you've been here awhile). Which campus will you be working at?
Britain Smith
That is awesome.

I will be working in the lithography group as the poly layer owner in D1D. It will be a bit of a change since I do mainly lithography development work for the n+1 generation memory devices (i.e. further out than the next generation or even the one after that) here at D2 in Santa Clara.

-Britain
Seagrave
Well, we'll get to know each other for sure. Are you working with Ramp or with TD?
TravisNeff
You'll have to get out and show them where to fill it up, and you will prolly never have a full tank of gas again, lol
jonwatts
C'mon, admit it, you'll miss Milpenis laugh.gif What was that bumper sticker you saw, "I love Milpitas, in my rearview mirror"

Congratulations, beautiful house, I'm sure you'll love it up there.

So if Oregon is the state where you can't pump your own gas is it Washington where they nail you for going 2 mph over the speed limit?

TravisNeff
That's right Jon, WA speed control sucks.

When I was living in San Diego (south carlsbad) I would leave at 4am and make it to Issaquah, WA by 9:30pm that night, and did the speed limit when I hit the WA border. Lucky I never got caught those few times I did it.
Trekkor
Well, Britain. I guess we'll have to wait until the WCC '06 until we can continue our a/x competition. laugh.gif

Good to hear things are working out in your favor for your family. clap.gif

It is hard to believe that people in Oregon would key a California plated car. In Sacramento every fourth car has Oregon plates. Of course they are probably living in California with a PO Box in Oregon so they can avoid the taxes here.

Congratulations. One of my colleagues just bought 40 acres in Oregon for 300K.

Only in Southern Washington to catch those Oregonians and make some money.

First trip once you relocate should be down to see Parts Obsolete and whats left of his part colection before its all gone.

Second trip is to the Ore Coast to drive the twistys!

Ya gotta drive up to Bremerton too to AX as we have long fast races up here.
Bruce Allert
Welcome Britain wavey.gif The house you're leaving prolly got you a better one up here. Our other school in Marin Co. has people driving 1 1/2 hrs. because they can't afford renting or buying. Hills-burrito is a nice city. You're also just minutes away from one of the best Concourse events that just happened a couple weeks ago . If you're into golf there's hundreds of courses and most are very inexpensive (except for the Reserve where Happy Gilmore play'd)!

As for the changing of license plates right away... fergitaboutid. The maliciousness toward Californians only goes on in redneck small towns (like it did to my family back in 66 when we moved to Bend) Now Bend is made up of most transplants!

Yer gonna like it here once you get used to no sun, rain, ice, snow, wind, too many trees, year round green grass and not having to pump yer own gas!............. beerchug.gif

.........b
Porsche Rescue
One more adjustment......our AX courses are a lot shorter than what you have in the bay area. Have to go north to Bremerton with Geoff to get a long course. We are asphalt challenged in the Portland area but always looking for more.

I did some R&D/reverse engineering up at the Aloha campus a few years ago (I think it was that one, are they pretty much right in the middle of a residential area??)

Hey Briton...Sherryl and I are driving up to Seattle Sept. 8th or 9th, maybe we could help with something.....

Britain, and family! Congrat's on the move and house purchase. I can't volunteer to help you move - MD is just a wee bit away from the left coast. Ditto on the U-haul comment, use someone else. I hope to fly out for WCC06, I still want to ride right seat with you on the AutoX track.

Have a safe move and enjoy the new home.
Rhodes71/914
Congrats on your move to Oregon and your new house. I recently left Bend, OR because of all the Cali transplants (not really but there are a lot). Portland is a great city.

Good luck!

ever notice how nice and new and clean the Penske rental trucks look?
